Graduate Student Research Assistantship:

Social-Ecological & Geospatial Dimensions of Aging Dams in the US

Inquiries and applications are welcome from those interested in pursuing a PhD in the Department of Environment and Society at Utah State University in Logan, Utah with ties to the Utah Water Research Laboratory. The successful applicant will join Dr. Courtney Flint’steam working an NSF-funded project I-Guide. The 4-year (PhD) assistantship provides a stipend, tuition, and health insurance. Anticipated start date could be August 2022 or January 2023.

Project Themes:

• Qualitative and Quantitative Social Science Methods for Assessing Local, Regional, National and Social-Ecological Dimensions of Aging Dams
• Critical Infrastructure Resiliency in the face of Aging Dam Failure Risk
• Vulnerable Populations and Ecosystems 
• Interdisciplinary Engagement with Geospatial, Hydrologic, and Cyberinfrastructure Dimensions

Qualifications:

• Completion of a Masters Degree in a related field (or substantial post-bachelor’s degree experience) prior to start date.  
• Social science background as part of educational training or professional experience
• Background and experience working with diverse datasets and GIS software
• Working knowledge of programs and platforms such as SPSS, R, Jupyter, etc. 
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
