Subsurface environments exhibit multiscale physical and chemical heterogeneity, which drive the mixing and reaction of solutes, particles, colloids, and microorganisms. Heterogeneity and intermittent flow dynamics within porous and fractured media lead to a range of non-linear behaviors that control the coupled mixing and reaction processes from microscopic to regional scales. The ability to accurately describe mixing across scales is essential for a wide range of predictions, yet robust descriptions remain challenging.

This session aims to discuss progress in experimental, numerical, and theoretical methodologies for quantifying and upscaling mixing and reaction phenomena across scales. We broadly encourage submissions that present new simulation, laboratory, and field-scale studies to understand mixing and reaction processes. Examples include imaging mixing and reactive processes, studying flow, mixing, and reactive transport from pore- to field-scale, including non-Newtonian and density-driven flows, and models and theories of hydrodynamic mixing and reaction dynamics, such as reaction hotspots and hot moments.
