HS17 - Cold Region Hydrology: Changes, Perspectives, and Sustainable Solutions

The rivers originated from mountainous systems of Asia feed three oceans and contribute significantly into global climate system. Water resources stored in glaciers, snowpack and permafrost are of critical importance for maintaining the streamflow regimes and sustainable social and economic developments of downstream countries. Flow regimes and water balance have been changed significantly during the past few decades based on hydrological and remotely sensed observations. The transformation of glaciers, snow cover and permafrost provide strong feedbacks to climate system amplifying the effects of warming. However, our understanding of the climate changes impact on hydrological processes of mountainous rivers is still very limited, which is one of key constrains on our capabilities to make any practical and efficient adaptation measures to manage water resources sustainably in the downstream regions. In this session we seek for the studies which contribute to the knowledge of cold-region hydrology of Asian continent in current and future climate, including but not limited to: 

• identifying the changes of hydrological systems and attributing them to various factors in different spatial and temporal scales (from case studies at research watersheds to large river basins and regions);

 • new and emerging methods and technologies to study current changes and provide future projections of hydrological systems (modelling, remote sensing, isotope hydrology, etc.); 

• studies of the socio-economic impacts of changing high-latitude and high-altitude hydrology on water availability and improved hydrological forecasting; • education, capacity building and international cooperation.
