Dear colleagues,

Dr. Mahesh R. Tapas is pleased to share that he will be joining the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES), Appalachian Laboratory, as an Assistant Professor of Watershed and Water Resources Science beginning in October 2026.

His research focuses on watershed hydrology, hydroclimatic extremes, nutrient fate and transport, surface groundwater interactions, watershed modeling, hydroinformatics, remote sensing, geospatial AI, and socio-hydrology. At UMCES, he will establish the Socio-Hydrology Lab, with the goal of developing integrated approaches that combine process-based models, field observations, remote sensing, and human decision making to support watershed restoration, climate resilience, and science-based water resources management across the Appalachian region, Chesapeake Bay watershed, and beyond. This research vision aligns with his planned program on hydroclimatic extremes, legacy nutrient dynamics, and socio-hydrologic decision support.

Dr. Tapas looks forward to building collaborations with researchers, agencies, NGOs, and industry partners. The lab will be recruiting graduate students and research personnel, and welcomes opportunities for collaborative research, proposal development, and interdisciplinary watershed science.

The Socio-Hydrology Lab will be recruiting graduate students and research personnel in the coming year. Please feel free to share this opportunity with interested candidates.
