Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to invite you to submit an abstract to the Session Title: H073. Global Change and Water Security:Upstream-Downstream Challenges in Asian Mountains

Location: New Orleans, Louisiana

Dates: 15–19 December 2025

AGU Sections: Hydrology (primary) | Global Environmental Change | Cryosphere

Session Info: H073

Abstract Deadline: 30 July 2025

Session Description: This session invites presentations exploring the complex dynamics of water security in Asian mountain regions in the context of the pressing challenges from global change. The high mountain regions of Asia are vital headwaters for major river basins supporting billions of people downstream. These areas are undergoing substantial changes in water availability and demand driven by climate warming, glacier retreat, land use transformations and socio-political pressures. Changes pose urgent questions about the resilience of coupled human-natural systems in upstream and downstream communities. We invite diverse contributions that examine these challenges in the context of water security. Topics include, but are not limited to: Cryospheric change linked to hydrological responses; Changing water availabilitydemand and allocation across transboundary basins; Climate vulnerability and adaptation in headwaters communities; and how these topics affect and linkto water security. We highly welcome studies focusing on integrated and holistic approaches that explicitly cover upstream–downstream linkages.
