We are trying to revive the ACM talk series we used to regularly have in 2011. The next is on data Visualization in the Cloud. On Oct 9. Details below.
ACM Hyderabad
Workshop on Data Visualization in the cloud
With Data Analytics and Data Sciences expanding its reach and usecases, and more business users directly looking for information and insights from data, Data Visualization is becoming a key element of any data analytics solutions. From do-it-yourself analytoisc visualization and report to deeper research on visualization approaches and techniques. All evolving rapidly. A short seminar to discuss two aspects of data visualization from practising researchers.

Talk #1: Dr.Shailesh Kumar, Google R&D
A Picture is worth a Million Numbers: The art and science of Visualizing Data
Visualization is used in data analytics to develop and convey insights about the data, discover trends and patterns in it, and interpret models and decisions, etc. In this talk we will demonstrate how visualization can be used to understand global structures, highlight local trends, interpret predictive models, and make better decisions in a variety of domains. We will dig deep into two specific applications of visualization: First, the visualization of credit customers in a "financial score space" using multi-dimensional scaling. Second, the visualization of large text corpora in a "semantic concept space" using self-organizing map.
Dr. Shailesh Kumar currently works in the Artificial Intelligence Group at Google. Prior to joining Google, he has worked as a Principal Dev. Manager at Microsoft (Bing) Hyderabad, Sr. Scientist at Yahoo! Labs Bangalore, and Principal Scientist at Fair Isaac Research in San Diego, USA. Dr. Kumar has over fifteen years of experience in applying and innovating machine learning, statistical pattern recognition, and data mining algorithms to hard prediction problems in a wide variety of domains including information retrieval, web analytics, text mining, computer vision, retail data mining, risk and fraud analytics, remote sensing, and bioinformatics. He has published over 20 conference papers, journal papers, and book chapters and holds over a dozen patents in these areas. Dr. Kumar received his PhD in Computer Engineering in and Masters in Computer Science in 1997, both from the University of Texas at Austin, USA..
Talk #2: Dr. Kamal Karlapalem, Dean academics, IIIT-H
High Dimensional Data Visualization and Exploration
It is possible to visually see two or three dimensional data and comprehend. For large and very high dimensional data sets it is not clear what the shape and size of prominent regions of data are. It is also difficult to figure out closeness among the points in high dimensional space. In this talk, we introduce the issues in high dimensional data visualization, and present few systems that provide visual feedback and help explore high dimensional data.
Dr. Kamal Karlapalem is a Professor at IIIT, Hyderabad (since 2000) and heads the Centre for Data Engineering. Prior to that he was a faculty member of Department of Computer Science at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (1992-2000). His research interests include Database Systems, Data Visualization, Data Analytics, Multi Agent Systems, Workflows, and Electronic Contracts.
