Make Music Chicago returns to International House for a day of free performances! The Volta String Quartet will perform Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings and George Walker’s Lyric for Strings simultaneously with other string quartets across the country. This performance is part of the Lift Every Voice Project—a musical statement about racial justice aiming to honor victims of hate crimes and promote unity in a divided population.

Jeff Wichmann, a Chicago native, has been playing koto—a Japanese plucked string instrument—for nearly 20 years, exploring traditional and contemporary Japanese music. He holds an Advanced Koto License from the Sawai Koto Institute in Tokyo, Japan, where he studied under koto master Kazue Sawai.

Jia Senghe has been playing the shakuhachi since 1984. The shakuhachi is the traditional flute of Japan and each one is made by hand using a special strain of bamboo. The sounds of this instrument have been described to be like "the freedom of wind, the fluidity of water, and the intensity of fire."

6:00PM-6:30PM
Rena Slavin, a student at the University of Chicago and a Global Voices Metcalf Fellow at International House, has been playing the piano for 15 years. She studied at the Manhattan School of Music Precollege Division for 10 years. Currently, she is an active member of the University of Chicago Piano Program.
