Hi All,

Thank u all for your active participation in group. Here is my question. In my current project ,thin pool/thin devices allocated to VMWARE DATASTORE and not able to figure out advantage of forming meta LUN from these thin devices ?

Hi Srini,

Forming meta will give adavantage if your are using different
filesystems with different sizes.

thin devices already stiped across all the devices which are there in
corresponding thin pool & we will get good IO performace if we do
stripe at Volume manager software level.

EMC is strongly recommending software striping at host volume manager
level to get good IO performance.

In your case if you present thin pool to VMWARE DATASTORE we will not
get a chance to stipe at host volume manager level.

Hope you got my point.

Thanks & Regards,
Muralidhar

Hi Srini,

More over if you go for FAST VP in future, it will be very much useful
in tiering hyper level(much granular).

Hi,

I have given answer for advantage in using the thin pools in VMAX,
appologies for that, as per my understanding to maintain the
uniformity across all the symmetrixes for SRDF purpose, as you need to
have same no.of Metamembers across primary and secondary devices(there
may be some other reasons as well).

Hi All,

u guys are correct and I believe this is underlying fact  form a thin devices  meta ( got a doc from power link) . thanks Murali and Karnati.

<EMC DOC>

When a write is performed to a portion of the thin device, the Symmetrix
array allocates a minimum allotment of physical storage from the pool
and maps that storage to a region of the thin device including the area
targeted by the write. These storage allocation operations are performed
in small units of storage called “thin device extents.” Thin device extents
may also be called “chunks,” “track groups” or just “extents.” The
Symmetrix array uses a round-robin mechanism to balance the allocation
of extents across all the data devices in the pool that are enabled and that
have remaining unused capacity. The extent size is 12 tracks (768 KB).
That means that the initial bind of a thin device to a pool causes one
extent, or 12 tracks, to be allocated per thin device. So a four-member
thin meta device would cause 48 tracks (3078 KB) to be allocated when
the meta is bound to a thin pool.
