The HXL Working group is considering adding a new
#currency hashtag to the core set. Values in the column underneath it would typically be
ISO 4217 currency codes, like "KES" for the Kenyan Shilling, or "USD" for the US dollar. It would be paired with the planned new
#value hashtag (
discussion thread) to provide the actual numeric amount.
Since exchange rates fluctuate over time, we are also discussing an attribute convention for providing a reference data for the currency, borrowing an idea from IATI. We have not yet decided on a convention, but something like #date +currency seems promising.
Use cases for this new hashtag would include market assessments, cash reporting, and possibly others (such as baseline data on household incomes).
Would you find this hashtag useful for your humanitarian data? Do you think this is the best way to tag the data? Please let us know.
Cheers, David
