Dear all,

I have just been looking at the CODs standards and their standard set of atribute names. These are given on this page (see the excel spreadsheet attached to the page with the link "COD Schema Dictionary"):
https://humanitarian.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/imtoolbox/pages/219971654/COD-AB+Standards+and+Process

It seem to me that many (if not most) of these attribute/field names could be specified using HXL. I was wondering if anyboby has produced a mapping of the COD attributes and their HXL equivilents? If so would you be able to share it please?

Many thanks,
Andy

Hi, Andrew. Great suggestion -- it's a discussion we've started many times, but never finished. The current HXL syntax wouldn't work exactly, because there are character length limits (and "#" might not be welcome), but I think it would be possible to come up with a shorter rendition that has a 1:1 mapping to known HXL hashtags like #country+code+v_iso3 or #adm3+name+v_fr

CJ Hendrix had an interesting alternative suggestion, to add a new resource (file) to Shapefiles with a table mapping the shapefile attributes to the HXL hashtags/attributes. If you're listening, CJ, please feel free to chime in.

Cheers, David

Thanks David,

The particular problem I'm working on at the moment doesn't not require a general purpose mapping of HXL and geodata attributes. The narrower aim of having a machine readable lookup table of the specific fields in the COD-AB schema for filegeodatabases, COD-AB schema for shapefiles and HXL would be a big help. An inelegant solution, though workable in for our problem would be to have the lookup table sit seperately as a text/csv/json etc. We don't need it to the integrated with the data storage. Hence the length and character limits for fieldnames shouldn't be a barrier in this case.

Since there are over 300 attribute names listed in the CODSchemaDictionary.xlsx I thought I should ask before tackling it myself.

A some future date I'd love to look at a general purpose way of storing and using HXL tags with shapefiles and fgdbs, but sadly that is out of scope for today's project.

Many thanks,
Andy

1. AFAIK, no one has attempted this complete mapping yet.

2. I think it's a great idea, and I'd be happy to be involved.

Cheers, David
