Work and Funding Opportunities
Dr. David Manz, AOE, Inventor of the Biosand Filter and Co-Founder of CAWST, was inducted into the Alberta Order of Excellence
Dr. David Manz was inducted into the Alberta Order of Excellence in October 2018. This is the highest honour that the province of Alberta can bestow on a citizen, and it is an official part of the Canadian Honours System. David Manz invented the biosand filter in the early 1990s at the University of Calgary. In 2001 he co-founded the Centre for Affordable Water and Sanitation Technology (CAWST) and made his invention freely available for humanitarian means.
RWSN Mentorship Program for Young Professionals
Mentorship presents the opportunity for young professionals or students to exchange with more senior professionals in the water sector in order to progress more rapidly, and to learn from each other. In 2019, RWSN is launching a mentorship scheme, aimed at matching young professionals under the age of 35 with more senior professionals in the rural water sector. The aim of this scheme is to help develop the new generation of water experts in the rural water sector, and to ensure the knowledge and experience acquired by senior members of the community is not lost. If you are interested in being a mentor or a mentee, fill out an interest form by 1st Feb 2019, and contact the RWSN Secretariat for more information.
UDUMA MALI to Benefit from a Grant from the GSMA
The newly created Malian company UDUMA MALI, a subsidiary of the French group Odial Solutions Group which offers drinking water services in rural areas adopts a novel approach combined with innovative technologies to render sustainable quality water services in the most isolated areas while assuring a steady flow of revenues. UDUMA MALI is one of the 12 grantees of round three of the GSMA Mobile for Development (M4D) Utilities Innovation Fund, supported by the UK Department for International Development (DFID) and Scaling Off-Grid Energy: A Grand Challenge for Development. Training Workshop Biosand Filter for Technicians – Feb 20th – 22th 2019, Hyderabad, India
The Biosand Filter for Technicians workshop delivered by the Sehgal Foundation and Center for Affordable Water and Sanitation Technology trains participants in demonstrating how to construct and install a biosand filter correctly, describing its operation and maintenance, selecting a suitable source of filtration sand and preparing it for installation, assembling and preparing the required tools and materials, describing key operating parameters, troubleshooting construction, installation and operation & maintenance, demonstrating how to conduct a follow-up visit and filling out monitoring forms. Participants may be individuals or groups who are working for an existing biosand filter project, planning a biosand filter project and want to learn how to properly construct and install filters. Training Workshop on the Introduction to Household Water Treatment and Safe Storage – Feb 27th – 28th 2019, Kenya
Household water treatment and safe storage (HWTS) is extremely effective at ensuring individuals, families and communities are able to access safe drinking water. It is a critical approach to mitigating unnecessary illness. By the end of this workshop delivered by the Center for Affordable Water and Sanitation Technology, you will have the knowledge necessary to make informed decisions about selecting appropriate HWTS options as well as how to implement and plan HWTS initiatives. UNC Water Institute Online Learning Course on Water Safety Plans (WSPs) – 11th March – May 10th 2019
The UNC Water Institute is offering a 9-week online learning course on Water Safety Plans (WSPs) aimed at those in the water industry with management, engineering, or operational responsibilities. This distance learning program offers knowledge, skill, and capacity building to ensure consistent drinking water safety and access as well as an opportunity to apply course assignments to developing a WSP for a local context. Throughout the course, key content is presented through problem-solving scenarios and case study examples. The course flyer is attached to this newsletter, and more information can be found here.
BushProof Technical Training in Water Infrastructure – April 8th – 13th 2019, Antananarivo, Madagascar
The BushProof Technical Training in Water Infrastructure is a broad, intense 6-day course with a heavy practical bias, providing an opportunity to learn through both theoretical and hands-on practical sessions. The training is addressed to both those who need more technical input for their work, as well as for those in management who find they have become more and more involved in water and/or sanitation programmes, but lack the basic technical and theoretical background. The training covers subjects such as drilling and well design, water treatment methodologies including jar tests, and pipe design for both gravity and pumped systems.

WaSH Policy Research Digest on the Impacts of Seasonality on Rural Water Supply
The WaSH Policy Research Digest on impacts of seasonality on rural water supply examines challenges water point management committees face during the rainy season. The accompanying literature review provides insight into the effect of seasonality on rural water quality, availability and use. The Digest, as well as the related webinar, are available here.
Pathways to Sustainability: A fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis of Rural Water Supply Programs
Ensuring long-term functionality of rural water infrastructure remains challenging. In this study by Marks et al., fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) is used to identify causal conditions (“pathways”) leading to sustained functionality of rural water supplies across diverse geographies. Results reveal three distinct pathways sufficient for achieving sustained functionality: piped networks with professionalized, service-oriented management and post-construction support; a self-supply approach delivering water services on premises; community-managed water points in the context of freshwater scarcity. Good financial management and user participation in project decisions were common across all pathways. Strong management, combined with sufficient financial and technical resources, moderates the influence of physical water availability on service sustainability. The article can be found here.
Mobile Crowd Participation to Root Small-Scale Piped Water Supply Systems in India & Bangladesh
The use of smartphone applications can support monitoring of the system and enhance local engagement and empowerment. In this article by Mink et al. the scope for mobile crowd participation as a research and monitoring tool for piped water supply systems is investigated.
In the investigated areas there is a desire for piped water systems and an interest in smartphone monitoring. The enabling environment to deploy mobile crowd participation for piped water system monitoring stimulates further research towards an investigation of potential functionalities and the actual development of such an application. Filtering Safe Drinking Wwater through Granulated Ceramics
The world is thirsty for safe drinking water. But too many do not have access, especially in developing regions.
