Leave the Leaves
You can "leave the leaves" this fall to help ensure that pollinator habitats are secure over the coming winter months. For clearing areas, consider raking or using an electric blower over gas (best during weekday/daylight hours) for less noise and air pollution.

Get Pumped for Composting and more!
Pumpkin season is here! According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, almost 2 billion pounds of pumpkins are grown each year for Halloween and more than half of those end up in landfills, where they produce harmful greenhouse gases. Use your Jack-O'-Lantern scraps - the stringy bits, seeds, and all - to reduce your food waste this fall season.
- Roast the pumpkin seeds for a healthy snack.
- Bake pumpkin bread, pumpkin pie, or throw your scraps into a curry.
- Use pumpkin scraps to make healthy dog treats
- Save your uncarved pumpkins for Thanksgiving decorations. Uncarved pumpkins can last up to 12 weeks before they start to rot.
When you're finished, compost the rest! All parts of the pumpkin are compostable including the stem, seeds, pulp, and skin. Make a plan to compost your pumpkin after the fall holiday season - read below for more information! |
