THE baton of leadership is changing hands at Hwa Chong Institution
(HCI).
Dr Hon Chiew Weng, 52, the current deputy chief executive officer and
principal of the high school section, will take over from principal
Ang Wee Hiong next month.
Dr Hon started as a Physics teacher in 1982 and became The Chinese
High School’s principal in 2003.
Two years later, when the school merged with Hwa Chong Junior College
(HCJC), he took on his current post.
Said Mr Robson Lee, 41, the joint-secretary in the board of directors:
‘Dr Hon was the primary person responsible for developing the six
years through-train programme…also the key person who had overseen the
development of the Beijing Satellite School programme.’
He said Dr Hon will be an excellent role model for HCI’s students, and
added that the board of directors is confident he will help the school
springboard to greater heights.
In a press statement, HCI also commended the outstanding work of Mr
Ang. Under his leadership, HCI established the Hwa Chong Diploma last
year and pioneered a boarding programme this year.
Said Mr Ang, 60: ‘I will miss the staff and students greatly, and I
will miss seeing them continue to grow, learn and achieve.’ After
stepping down, he plans to spend more time with family members and
travel.
His successor, who says he has a deep passion for promoting a research
culture in the school, hopes to establish a virtual global network of
alumni who can help guide various research projects undertaken by the
students.
‘My initial plan is to have two alumni support groups in the USA, two
in the UK, two in China and one in Hong Kong,’ said Dr Hon.
Meanwhile, HCI students interviewed described Dr Hon as someone who
has a great rapport with his students.
Said JC1 student Koh Zhe Wei, 17: ‘From the way he interacts during
assemblies, you can see he understands students well.’
Secondary 4 student Troy Tan, 16, added: ‘He is humorous and tries to
integrate students’ feedback when he is making decisions, for
instance, when introducing a new way of assessment.’
The appointment of HCI’s new principal coincided with the appointment
of Mr Desmond Ong as the new chairman of the school’s board of
governors.
The board also welcomed new members including Mr Robin Hu, senior
executive vice-president, Chinese Newspapers and Newspaper Services at
Singapore Press Holdings, and Mr Ted Tan, the deputy chief executive
officer of Spring Singapore.
