hi all,

Here are some names that have been floated as possibilities for our HV cider group, below. Just a start, variations on a theme, nothing set in stone!

Please propose any other names you think we should consider, and once we have a good list I will set up a voting system.

Something to consider: we want to emphasize cider and cider apples, but don't want to exclude spirits.
And if we can come up with an easy, short, simple name it could be paired with a tagline for more clarity.

Who's good with HV folklore and history - any good apple/cider references?

thanks,
Sara

  • Hudson Valley Cider Alliance
  • Hudson Valley Hard Cider Alliance
  • Hudson Valley Cider & Spirits Alliance
  • Hudson Valley Cider Apple Society
  • Hudson Valley Cider Union
  • Half Moon Cider Society, an alliance for Hudson Valley hard cider and apple spirits
  • Half Moon Cider Alliance, promoting the Hudson Valley as a cider region

etc.!

Hi,
I'm good with HVCA, the "A" being alliance.  It seams collegial and formal with out sounding "strictly businesses" (i.e., association) or Renaissance fair (i.e., guild.)
Too bad it can't spell something, Someone please: Acronym this!

As previously pointed out, it's hard to spell ANYTHING with "HV" as
your base for names, but here goes:

Hudson Apple Alcohol Makers (HAAM)
Hudson Valley Apple Potable Producers League/Legion (HV APPLe)
Hudson Valley Apple Beverage Congregation/Crew/Crowd/Conglomerate/
Cartel (HV ABC)

I dunno. I'm indifferent (although impressed with myself for HV
APPLe).

Thanks, Tim!

Anyone have leanings towards any options that have been proposed?

I will say that I think it's better to have an easily pronounced and
understandable full name than aspire too much for an acronym, especially
since HV has us at a disadvantage already.

Other suggestions?

Thanks,
Sara

I'm pretty ambivalent about an acronym but... what the hell:

Hard Cider Apple Society of the Hudson Valley: Hard CASH (um, Valley I guess)

Yeah, that sucks. Personally, I was fine with the original Hudson Valley (Hard) Cider Alliance (Assn., Guild, whatever).

Keep your suggestions coming!

Once we’ve heard from a few others in the group, I’ll pick what appear to be the top candidates and we’ll vote!

(I like Half Moon too... Short and distinct but still tied to Hudson River history.)

Hi all,

Not to be a bummer, but I should say that we have a gin coming out in July called "Half Moon" and we've already had a bit of a trademarking issue with it. I would think that another organization promoting beverage alcohol using that name could pose a few problems. Sorry I didn't notice that one before.

Any other Hudson Valley / River references out there?

If not...
I have been using the Hudson Valley Cider Alliance informally, and it seems to be working well. “Association” seems to suggest something more formal/official, whereas “Alliance” conjures a certain camaraderie, as Andy said. It’s also general and short, which is good, and we can come up with some kind of tagline or sentence to use that gives a bit more detail and explicitly mentions hard cider, apples, spirits, etc.

Speaking of which – who will volunteer to help craft a mission statement?

Keep your ideas coming! We need to make a decision soon.

Great idea! - I like the use of upper/lower case.   Perhaps Hudson Valley Cider Alliance could be: HvCa

What if the name has a tagline so we can include more - for example

Hudson Valley Cider Alliance
Apples Fermented & Distilled

HvCa
APPLeF&D

I wasn't really going for the Upper/Lowercase thing.  That was just to point out that my acronym needed to include the second letter of "League" to work.  "HvCa" looks kinda like a molecular formula, no offense.

I like Hudson Valley Cider Alliance and the tagline you included is a nice touch when appropriate, but I think to keep whatever professional clout we have we should avoid mixing the upper/lowercase in our title.

Hey gang,

I agree with all of this.

Great job, Polly. I think this works well:

Hudson Valley Cider Alliance
Apples Fermented & Distilled

And I think we should avoid an acronym as much as possible.

Anyone else want to offer further input? Dan, Elizabeth, Jeff, Doug, Adam, Derek...??

Polly: are you willing to help craft the mission statement with me? We can draft some options for all to review.
Anyone else interested in helping with that?

Best,
Sara

You're right Tim - it looks like a chemistry symbol.  Agree that the acronym is a difficult thing with HV.

I'd be glad to help draft a mission statement..

I am against all of them- ha ha just kidding. I really like the one below. Hudson Valley Cider Alliance      Apples Fermented and Distilled.     ( Alliance, Group, Producers, Organization, Union ,Fraternity, Society, Association, Cooperative, Coalition etc all work for me) Then we can come up with some kind of cool symbol if everyone thought was a good idea. Thanks, Doug

Great! Sounds like we are generally agreed on the name.

The plan at this point is actually to reshape the existing Cider Route materials to represent the HV Cider Alliance. So the logo right now is a dotted line in the shape of a wine glass around an apple, portrayed as if on the end of a barrel (with stencil-style lettering, suggesting apple bins and farm signage...).

I attach one version here, but will be working with the designer to reshape everything - we are going to experiment with a few options. What do you think?

We have discussed launching a website with profiles of each of your establishments (linking to your websites) and other resources, and I am beginning that process now. Will be in touch with more soon.

I’d also like to rewrite and reshape the brochure that was created for the Cider Route to focus on fermented/distilled beverages and each of your businesses. But we’d preserve the general look of it – sample also attached.

Other suggestions?
Best,
Sara

I'm liking "Hudson Valley Cider Alliance", though HVCA is unfortunately very close to HVAC, the  acronym for Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning specialists.

Maybe "Cider Alliance of the Hudson Valley"? Too belabored?

Just a thought,

Dan
