I have to agree with you. I bought an AJS 125 Daytona last year and it is rubbish .The front sprocket came off on the road . I had to have a new gear box fitted costing over 1000. There is problems with the chain . The suspension is hard and cant be adjusted. the cooling fan packed up .The bearings went in the back wheel within one year It broke down on the road and is now back in the garage for repair all this in just over a year and 4000 miles. This is what I call a rubbish bike. Most motorcycle garages wont touch them as they are more trouble than they are worth and I don't blame them.( Buy Cheap you buy twice ) Be warned.
I have had a Daytona for 2 years now. To begin with there were problems but i think that was down to how the dealer put it together. Regular maintenance means i have had no problems. Ride to work every day, ride out at weekends and 300 mile trips are no problem.
Got to concede the paintwork on the frame is poor. Going to strip it down and solve this over the winter.
You don't know anything about bikes. Everybody else knows the engine is a bolt for bolt copy of a standard Honda engine so the Honda manual works. I've got two of these engines in various bikes and they are very good NEW engines and not broken down old Jap rubbish from 20 years ago that have been to the moon and back. All parts are easily obtainable and very reasonably priced, which is not the case with most overhyped Japanese makes, Honda being particularly bad at overpricing components. All bike shops worth knowing would work on them as they are the same as any other bikes and 90% of all new bikes being sold these days are Chinese anyway so any shop that doesn't want to deal with them is a failure as a modern motorcycle shop. I've been a mechanic for over 50 years and I DO know bikes. In short these Chinese engines are better in every way than the Honda ones they are copied from.
It is good to see someone else who is happy with their AJS. I have the Daytona and have done many miles on it. The bike had a few niggly problems when i first got it but I think that was down to the dealer who was sloppy when he put it together.
i am interested in the mods you have done. I regularly do a 320 mile round trip on this bike and on some of the long hills the bike struggles with speed. I have replaced the air filter and rejetted the carb but can't find a CDI unit. Each of the suppliers either do not reply to my messages or say that their units are not compatible. Can you please tell me what make and model your performance CDI unit is.
From what I recall this model is made by Jianshe in China who make YBR125s for Yamaha now, whilst other AJS models are made in other factories by other companies. Jianshe are a pretty advanced company and well capable of churning out good bikes.
I've ridden bikes for 31 years and now own an Eos. Done 4000 miles on it trouble free. Never fails to start. Gear linkage is fine.
Don't know what issues you have had really. I routinely service mine every 600 miles and it rewards me with reliability.
Hoping Baldy68 can advise...
I am about to get my first bike... aged 54... you seem to know your stuff after 31 years. I read terrible reviews and good ones of AJS bikes. When I was a kid they were revered as classics. Now they get dissed as relabelled chinese cheapies.. Would you have time to give an unbiased opinion on the bike as a whole on a wider basis? I think that would really help and be really welcome.
Cheers
Martin
Hi
They are now made in China, but the Name AJS is still owned by the same family and are sticklers for quality. I'm soon going to be buying my second bike from them, "The Bobber"
Early models did have Quality issues, New ones are all good though.
A few things to change as a matter of course for a more trouble free riding.
1, put in some iridium spark plugs
2, put on a higher spec chain, the original one stretches quite rapidly
3, remove catalytic converters (they knock out easy enough) They're not needed in UK and to be honest, drain a substantial amount of power out of the engine.
Seriously though, that is it. Customer service is second to none too. If you are a facebook user, find Owners club I started.
Hopefully we'll get to meet up
Ride safe
Hello, I am 18 years old and am in love with this bike, I am wondering about the chrome on the bike, is it fake or? Also are they any thing that you recommend changing on the bike when being bought bran new thanks :)
OK, so the 600 mile Report. So far so good. As part of the service they increased the front sprocket size by 1 tooth. 2 teeth wouldnt fit but AJS via PB motorcycles confirmed today that they can fit a 1 tooth smaller size sprocket at the rear. Before the fron sprock change it was happy doing 50. I took it to 60 accidntly twice going down hill and it was screaming quite a lot so breaked to bring it back down.
With the font sprock now changed it happily cruises at 60. I another couple of hundred miles i'm going to get the rear one done.
The ride is still a pain in the behind but my folks got me a get seat saver and whilst i still get the ass-ache i last a lot longer before i have to get off.
It does have a fith gear after all and acceleration is acceptable for my needs. I'm not a race. so long as i can pull off safely in the desired direction at a safe speed i'm happy. Chromes is heavy maintenance. Be prepared. i cant emphasise that enough. I've also added some fork protectors so stones dont start to take chips out of them. I'm still very happy with this bike and apart from heavy suspension i'm very happy. There is only one negative. It doesnt rattle the windows of the houses as i drive past but hey, its a 125 and its early days. Once i've passed the test, hello 350!!!
you must of been a rubbish bike cleaner. all motorbikes will rust it is a very cleaver recipe of water and a lazy owner how cannot be arsed to clean it properly. paint only fades in direct sunlight when not polished. any vehicle can have a electrical issue if you can find any motorcycle dealership within the uk that can gurantee you will not have a fault within the first three months I will Buy you a Bugattiue veyron.
rubbish review may i recommend a motorcycle maintenance book from amazon.
hope this helps clear this up
The whole point of writing a review is to warn potential buyers of the pit fall's of buying cheaply manufactured chinese bikes. Which is what that owners review pointed out. Mattplested's response is one of ignorance. Firstly. Chinese bikes are manufactured using substandard materials. Plastic's are brittle, steel is poor quality, and so is the paint and no amount of polishing will prevent whatever they put on their products from fading, that's why they're cheap. You wonder why dealers who have burnt their fingers no longer sell them? I've seen it all, and still run a successful motorcycle dealership in it's 40th year. So Mattplested, you going to tell me that I'm wrong too? Ever owned one? a bike that is.
Read this comment from mattplested. Obviously someone whose either a Chinese bike fanatic or one of those foolish know it all's who has experienced issues with this type bike and can't bring themselves to own up to it? Mattplested perhaps a return to school to improve on your grammar/punctuation and spelling might be a good start?
I've got a dd50e-2 and the dealer i got it from said they where good and reliable and whithin a week it had to go back as the tank was pressuresing and then the seal on the transmission whent and it went back i've reccently replaced the engine and found an angle grinder cut on the sump and there is no point taking it back to get a refund as i went in to get a electrical fault sorted and they tried to say that halogen bulbs are ment to melt when they stop working. the dealer i got my bike from is BATH ROAD MOTORCYCLES DO NOT SHOP AT THIS DEALER THEY LOST THEIR DEALERSHIP CONTRACT WITH AJS, BMW AND YAMMAH THEY ARE NOW SELLING KTM's BEWARE THEY RIPP YOU OFF AND SHOULD NOT BE IN BUSSNIESS.
