Subject: Te Awa Kairangi - upcoming works on Queens Drive / High St roundabout
Kia ora,
We would like to provide you with a digital copy of the letter delivered yesterday (28 January 2026) to residents and businesses located near to the Queens Drive / High St roundabout.
The letter shares information about the upcoming closure of the Queens Drive / High St roundabout to vehicles, while it is converted to a traffic lighted intersection from 2 March until December 2026.
Access to businesses remains available and pedestrians will still be able to move around the area, as highlighted by the dashed red lines on the map within. A small number of car parks outside of McDonald’s and 300 and 330 High St will need to be removed. The bus stops outside Burger King/Armstrong’s on High St are being temporarily relocated to Cornwall St, Metlink will share more information on this soon.
Last year, some businesses agreed to share posters in their stores to help advertise works for us to their customers. If you would like a poster for your business, please advise how many and what size.
Today, we are updating our website, social media and sharing this information via email in the programme newsletter. The two large orange signs located on the roundabout, currently advertising the Rutherford St/Queens Dr roundabout connection closure will be replaced on Friday to advertise this upcoming closure. We will also be installing VMS boards in early February. As part of the road closure, we will install additional signage around the area to ensure the public remain aware businesses are still open.
This is one of the most disruptive changes we’ll have to make during the construction of the SH2 Melling Transport Improvements. The only other way we could make the necessary changes to the intersection would involve 18 to 24 months of stop/go traffic management, weekend and night closures, and ultimately, a less safe environment for you to drive through and for our crews to work in. This closure will allow us to get far more work done in a much shorter period. We’re acutely aware of not only the impact it’ll have on how people move around the area, but of the cumulative impact of all the work going on around the Melling area and CBD.
Regular updates will be posted on Te Awa Kairangi Facebook page, and you can find more information and sign up for the programme newsletter at www.teawakairangi.co.nz
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out and we’re happy to pop in for a chat.
Many thanks for your patience and understanding while we deliver this project.
Kia pai tō rā! | Have a great day!

Hi Elaine!
Yes, we have cycling representatives in the Riverlink PDLG, and cycling and walking is being considered as best as we can all push (unfortunately we have had some losses).
Note that the Eastern side Rivertrail will be closed shortly as well, and cyclists will be redirected onto a currently-being-built cycle path along Rutherford St opposite Woolworths.
In time that will also have to be closed temporarily, and there will be even more changes… Stay tuned.
No, no update from Jojo yet.
Thanks,
Gene
