Kia ora Gene and Matthew,

This is a reminder that final works to connect Whakawhirinaki Silverstream Pipe Bridge to the drinking water network are scheduled to start tomorrow. Due to the location of the works, the cycle route heading north, adjacent to SH2 at Silverstream will be closed from 13 September until early October.

While this route is impacted, we’re encouraging cyclists to opt for alternative routes for their commute (map attached):

  • Road bikers are advised to get off at Kennedy Good Bridge (Avalon) and use Harcourt Werry Drive, Taita Drive and Eastern Hutt Road
  • Bikes that can manage a gravel trail can cross the Manor Park Pedestrian Rail Bridge and then use the track past the Manor Park Golf Course

Cyclists can also use the train service between Manor Park and Silverstream.

  • Trains are running as per usual between from 14 –19 September, with some partial or full bus replacements following this. For the full bus replacement schedule during the works, check out MetLink’s webpage.
  • Please note, some northbound trains do not accept bicycles during peak hours. This MetLink timetable will not change between now and October, so cyclists/you can look up any weekday and find out which service allows bikes (any service without a c).

The project team has been working closely with NZTA to plan for the signage. VMS boards have been in place since Monday to reach as many cyclists as possible, ahead of the traffic management set up tomorrow, Saturday, 13 September. VMS signs will be in place on SH2 just south of the northbound off-ramp and SH58 near the reservoirs at the top of the Haywards Hill.

Please plan ahead and use alternative travel options or cycling routes. If you could continue sharing this information with the wider cycling community through your own channels, that’d be greatly appreciated! For more information on the project, head to the project webpage. We’ll be providing regular updates before and during the works to keep you informed. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Thank you for your patience and understanding!

The final works to connect Whakawhirinaki Silverstream Pipe Bridge to the drinking water network are now well underway! Please find the latest update on the project below.

The existing pipes have been excavated. To carry out the works safely, we need to make additional pipe modifications ahead of the actual cut-in works to connect the new pipe bridge to the drinking water network. This means the northbound shoulder, adjacent to SH2 at Silverstream, will be closed until mid-October.

While this route is impacted, we’re encouraging cyclists to opt for alternative routes for their commute:

  • Road bikers are advised to get off at Kennedy Good Bridge (Avalon) and use Harcourt Werry Drive, Taita Drive and Eastern Hutt Road
  • Bikes that can manage a gravel trail can cross the Manor Park Pedestrian Rail Bridge and then use the track past the Manor Park Golf Course

Cyclists can also use the train service between Manor Park and Silverstream.

  • Please note, some northbound trains do not accept bicycles during peak hours. Cyclists can look up any day on the MetLink timetable and find out which service allows bikes (any service without a c).

Please plan ahead and use alternative travel options or cycling routes.
