I wish I could say my experiment with group housing for our two ponies came from a virtuous desire to do what was best for their health based on the latest equine research. In truth, putting the ponies together in one large stall was about necessity, about working with what we had. And what we had in 2010 was one large, wide-open space in a long-neglected pre-Civil War stone bank barn.
But we never did put in those stalls. What started as a temporary arrangement became permanent because it worked so well. Our ponies were calm and better behaved, on the ground and in the ring. Today, a growing body of research helps to explain why.
Some of the most compelling evidence related to how confinement affects the well-being of horses comes from a study conducted at Nottingham Trent University (NTU) in England. The researchers measured the physiological and behavioral stress responses of 16 school horses when they were kept in four different housing situations for five-day periods:

On day one of our photo shoot, with enthusiastic photographer Marcus Brauer in tow, I could not wait to get my hands on a pitch fork and turn a straw bedded stall into a comfy and cozy horse den. I admit, I find this fun.
What is straw bedding? Straw is a byproduct of the production of rye, wheat, oats or barley. The dried stems are bundled together just like hay. Oat straw is most absorbent, rye straw is the least desirable, since it may contain elements that when ingested can cause choking. (!)
What are wood shavings? Wood shavings are byproducts of wood manufacturing of any kind. They usually consist of several types of wood. We must distinguish between wood shavings from a bedding manufacturer and shavings you can purchase from a mill. We also must distinguish between the coarser wood shavings and the fine saw dust. (See below)
Although wood shavings, saw dust, and pine pellets are more common, there has been a growing demand for non allergenic and chemical free beddings such as hemp and kenaf. American and NC owners of horses with allergies or respiratory problems have been looking into hemp horse bedding as an alternative, especially because it is more absorbent and dust free in comparison to the other types of beddings available. I am surprised I did not see a reference to hemp horse bedding.
My horses were stalled just like this, only their connected paddock was limestone. Their stalls were matter for saftey. Concrete can become very slippery for hooves when wet, and also cause hazards if the horses walk on it with snow packed in their feet. I put bedding in my stalls since my mare would spend a lot of time inside, and would exclusively lie down inside. I prefer to put some bedding in incase they do urinate inside.
