My name is Steven and I've been interested in a hurdy gurdy for a while, but I don't believe I should invest in one until after I've tried playing one for a while. I live in Allen, Texas. Does anyone know a place that perhaps rents them out, or who would be willing to do so for a week?

Much obliged,
Steven

Steven,

I’ve never seen any place that rents them. I think your best bet would be to find one of the festivals that pop up from time to time and travel to it. Often the organizers of such festivals, if they know in advance, can arrange to have learner instruments brought in. As you note the investment is very high, but HG players in my experience tend to be willing to help out quite a bit.

Hi, Steven! I don’t know of any places around that rent them, but I just wanted to say hi! I’m just north of Austin, TX, and bought my first hurdy gurdy last year. I’m having fun learning, though I am lucky to have one friend in the area who happens to also play, and can show me a few tips.

Hi Steven,

You might try Angela Mariani and Chris Smith, who are on music nfaculty at TTU-Lubbock (not sure how far you are, in that immense state!); they might not necessarily have an instrument but perhaps someone in their medieval ensemble (Altramar) might, or might know who does.

Best of luck,
Vlad
