Thanks for all of the suggestions. I've tried Olympic, but they aren't responding to my emails.
Is there another string that's comparable to the Savarez, that's a little more available that anyone knows about? I guess my question is, what brands are other people using?
I've only had my gurdy for a few months and want backup strings.
Thanks for any help,
Belinda

Does anyone know of a good source for Savarez strings in the U.S.?

I get my mine from Olympic Instruments, i.e. Alden and Cali.

If Cali and Alden (Olympic) are still selling strings, they'd definitely be
the best bet.
Otherwise, I don't think you can get Savarez gut strings in the US. The
only other practical way I know of to buy them is from Arpeges in Paris.
Here's the Savarez strings page from their website:
_http://www.arpeges.fr/instruments/CORDES-19/CORDES-491/CORDES-INSTRUMENT-ANCIEN-1382/_
(http://www.arpeges.fr/instruments/CORDES-19/CORDES-491/CORDES-INSTRUMENT-ANCIEN-1382/) .
And here's the email: _arp...@arpeges.fr_ (mailto:arp...@arpeges.fr) . As
I recall, there are some salespeople there who speak good English, although
I normally communicate with them in French. The Arpeges folks are very
efficient and friendly...the only downside to buying your Savarez strings from
them is the painful French export duty on sales to countries outside of
France...so be forewarned.

I communicate directly with the french rep for my lute strings, being that
only SAVAREZ guitar strings are readily available in Canada, but not the
other types of strings. They have always sent to me directly without any
problems, I would imagine for HG it would be sensibly the same procedure:
Philippe Durand
SAVAREZ SA
5, Avenue Barthélémy Thimonnier

FRANCE
Tel : (33) 04.37.40.32.00
Fax : (33) 04.37.40.32.10
email : sava...@aol.com
I'm sure you can write to them in english, every french businessman speaks
english, being unfortunately the language of business....

Hi folks,
may be I'm late in this topic, but we had some problems with SAVAREZ strings one year ago. They changed the way to make it : they asked to someone else to make it under their name.
Jean-Claude BOUDET told me that with some SAVAREZ brh 68, 71 ou 74, it's sometimes impossible to put the cotton, even with rosin. He had to use some abrasive paper on the string at the place where the cotton must be put.
The people from SAVAREZ didn't admit the fact, but later they recognised they use a subcontractor. May be they try several differents, now, they are making the strings in Germany, where JC Boudet is buying the strings he uses.
If some SAVAREZ strings look strange, ry some abrasive paper (gently !)
and keep on turning !
