A small 3 string Hurdy Gurdy

Hello,
A few years ago I had the idea of building a small but fully
functional Hurdy Gurdy. I was hoping to make a small travel
instrument that would easily fit in the overhead compartment of an
airplane. The minimum requirements for a fully fuctional gurdy are 3
strings, melody, drone, trompette and chromatic keyboard. The
instrument worked out very nice, it looks good and sounds good. Here

At a recent music festival in July, I was fortunate to find Mel and
Anne Dorries at their "Hurdy Gurdy Crafters" vendor booth. Mel is an
excellent builder(and becoming quite a good player too) and along
withhe had on display his most recent HG design, the "Minuet", a
small, fully functional 3 string gurdy. I tried the instrument for
quite a while and it looks and sounds great. It has melody, drone,
trompette, and chromatic keyboard, just like my small instrument. The
sound is very balanced and the trompette action is incredibly
accurate. If you are considering a first instrument or a small one to
travel with, I would highly recommend the "Minuet". I don't think
you'll find a better instrument at such a low price. Here is a link:

most guitar-back (not luteback) HGs fit quite OK on overhead compartments in most airlines with room to spare.

Whether you can convince the ground crew to let you embark and show them it fits with plenty of room to spare, that's a different story.
