Hello,

My eight year son is learning the violin and able to play basic tunes in the first position.  His teacher has suggested that he plays a violin/hurdy-gurdy duet with me at a Christmas concert.  Does anyone have any recommendations for a simple traditional Christmas carol that works well on the hurdy-gurdy?  We have a few weeks to work on it!

Thanks,

Paul

Ding Dong Merrily on High works very well, I have played it on
hurdy-gurdy in church at Christmas with a choir

It is a very old Tudor ? dance ? called Bransle Officiel

I would think any older christmas carol or noels would sound wonderful on the hurdy.  Of course Im biased tho...Noels would sound wonderful I think...I do a lot of English Country dancing... and there are a lot of the tunes we dance to that are not necessarily Christmas songs that would certainly pass for Christmas songs...or at least sound Christmassy... like Nonesuch... one of my favorites.

Thanks to everyone for your replies.  Some great suggestions - made me realise how old many of the traditional Christmas tunes are.  Hopefully this thread has inspired some other players too!  Paul

I appreciate the thread. Now that I've taken my gurdies to 3 story times and become Preschool legend :^) my coworkers want me to play Mamselle at the Christmas staff meeting. The Big Time!

Thanks,
Barbara
