Fabulous article and except. Loved it.
I found this to resonate in my life as a trombonist.
The art of having a mentor. In my life at about age 15, I had network tv trombonist in New York city, Charles Small, as my guiding light for two years on that instrument. Mr. Small would dress up to give me a lesson. He had had polio in his lifetime. He had a certain manner and slow walk. He would wear a thin tie, white shirt, and all his music was kept in an old wooden cabinet. Very old-school and a dear memory for me looking back. Straight-backed chairs. The music stand light. It was mentoring.
