Tuning Diagrams

They look right to me. That last key you refer to can be tuned to
whichever of the two pitches you need. Some HGs have different
arrangements at the upper end of the instrument. Mine, for instance,
lack the key you asked about, but instead has its equivalent in the
lower row. Doesn't really matter in this case, since it could be tuned
as appropriate.

Regarding the color of the keys, just pretend you're playing an old
piano. Prior to 1900 or so, many pianos had the exact same color
arrangement as on the HG. See

Or visualize them in whatever color you like: black, white, lime green, hot
pink, violet polka-dots... The only person who should be able to see what
color your keys are is the person sitting in front of you. If you're looking
at anything, you should be looking at the backs of the keys.

Sounds to me like a case of too much learning and thinking and not
enough being and doing. Try closing your eyes- that way the colors
are moot.

Must admit, I'd need a mirror to see the keys and watching the little end
bits pop in and out is harder than just learning where the darn keys are
(and distracting).
Until mentioned here, I'd never have dreamed of watching them and, erm, it's
also rather difficult to do when reading from music which restricts you a
little :)
That, of course, applies to most instruments and, if you also play something
like a clarinet, makes you cross-eyed as well.

I still haven't gotten a simple answer to my question about the status of my
instrument. I was promised a phone call or some sort of report on the
status of the repairs. Nada.

The instrument was not strung they way I ordered, the center seam on the
back was not glued or it was glued poorly, the chanter strings were not the
strings your own website said they would be, and you've been unresponsive.
To your credit, you did ship me a loaner and paid for shipping my instrument
back for repair, which I do appreciate.

However, it was my $2500 you have spent and I still don't have an
instrument. It has been one year since I sent the down payment and was told
I'd be a happy little camper in three months.

This public message seems to be the only way I can get a response at all
from you, and not much of one at that. These messages will BE the "regular
programming" until I get my REPAIRED instrument back.

This is not comfortable for me either -- it's a bit nauseating, really. And
as for how many hours you've been teaching . . . well, it's a tough old
world and I teach a lot of hours, too. But I don't treat people with the
apparent disdain with which you have treated me.

Dear Doug,

You are absolutely correct. Alden and I are horrible people. We are selfish
and make crappy instruments. We don't know what we are doing and we have never
helped anyone in the hurdy-gurdy world. We have obviously been put on this
earth to make your life difficult. Your needs are certainly more important
than anyone else's and we really understand that you need for us to stop
everything else that we are doing and pay attention to you.

Your instrument will be ready as soon as I finish repairing the damage caused
to it by exposure to very low humidity. Until then, you have available to you
at our expense an instrument that is virtually identical to the one you
ordered, strung precisely as you requested. As to exactly when you will
receive your instrument I cannot tell you. We have among other things a
funeral to attend this weekend which will interrupt our schedule yet again.
As soon as I can figure out how to get those pesky relatives to die when it is
convenient I will have a better idea when I will have your instrument
finished.

Now that we have answered your question, and admitted our faults, will you
please contact us directly and stop wasting time and bandwidth for other
members of this list? They are nice people and deserve to have a reasonable
environment in which to discuss matters which interest and concern them.
