Who made your hg? I couldn't do that back-and-forth cranking on my hg, for fear of the cotton and/or crank coming off.

You can do it if you glue the cotton with liquid colofone.

German Diaz in Galiza/Spain has a Weichselbaumer as well and he uses liquid rosin (I think Neil Brook's rosin) to make the cotton stay in place and then bow in both directions, emulating a cello.
 
You can find many of his videos (like his amazing PI) on youtube.
