I cannot find many books on building the gurdy. Here is one that has a
chapter on the subject. This book is out of print, but I found a copy
at Amazon:

Making and Playing Musical Instruments Jack Botermans, Herman
Dewit, Hans Goddfroy

University of Washington Press Seattle

English Translation Copyright 1989 by Trendbook International

Text by Afke den Boer and Margot de Zeeuw

ISBN: 0-295-96948-2

This book has a chapter and plans for building a gurdy.

Hi Tim,

Thanks for the tip on that book. As far as "How To" information, I recommend Neil Brook's 2 DVDs: Construction and Maintenance.

http://www.hurdy-gurdy.org.uk/  [I can't get to the DVD page, now, for some reason.]

I hope this group will come alive to enable aspiring hurdy-gurdy builders to be more successful.

Regards,
Michael

This is an interesting book, but won't create a workable instrument until you add Alden Hackman's extensive notes!

There is also a wonderful two-volume tome with all the details, pictures and plans you would ever need.  It is, unfortunately, all in French, but as Neil Brook said "The pictures are in English".  I don't remember the name and publisher, but Mel Dorries at Hurdy Gurdy Crafters has a copy, and I'm sure he would be happy to supply the details.

Thank you, David!

I will track down the two-volume set. Thanks for the link to the 'notes' also.  Tim

Tim--

Judging from the Alden Hackmann notes on pages 109-119 that David told us about, I assume this hurdy-gurdy chapter is about 11 pages?

Thanks for the link, David!

Yes Michael,

it is a short chapter, about eleven pages, but it was all I have found
so far. Aldan Hackmann's notes would be invaluable if you were
building from this book. Tim
