Hi all,

I've been trying to come up with a good topic for this month's meeting, and one of my interns got me thinking. He saw the way I'd implemented something and said he'd never seen that (functions as parameters in C++) before, and he seemed generally interested. I was hoping that maybe we could get together to have a round table discussion about how to get young'uns and curious veteran programmers into functional programming. I'm thinking of things like (but not limited to):
  • Good katas to introduce functional concepts
  • Lambda calculus primers/tutorials
  • Making functors and the functional trinity (map, filter, reduce) concepts easily understood
  • Functional language features that people might find handy (i.e., destructuring, immutable types, Result/Option types, etc.)
  • How FP makes testing easier, software more maintainable, etc.
While we are all functional-minded (or at least functional-curious), it'd be great to try and figure out ways to reach out to our peers and juniors/interns so that we can get them exposed to concepts outside of OOP.

The reason I said location TBD is I'd like to move it to my office we have multiple meeting spaces that are large enough to house our group, and I have more control over the calendars for those rooms. I work for The Millennium Corporation now, and we're at 340 Bridge Street, Suite 212. The building is the same one The Melting Pot was in, and our suite is up on the second floor. You can take the elevator by The Melting Pot, or come in the doors to office space in between H&M and It'Sugar. I would definitely like to thank Greg Bacon for not only letting us use his place for a couple of months, and definitely to Drew McDowell for booking the Radiance conference room for us for... I'm not sure, but it's a really long time. If for some reason y'all would prefer not to be at Bridge Street, I'm fine with that; I'll just need to line up some meeting space quickly.

Hopefully I'll see y'all on Thursday and see what we can do to spread functional concepts around!
