TheReturn of Ringo (Italian: Il ritorno di Ringo) is a 1965 Italian spaghetti Western film directed by Duccio Tessari from a screenplay he had co-written with Fernando Di Leo, inspired by Homer's Odyssey. It stars Giuliano Gemma (billed as 'Montgomery Wood') in the title role, which, in spite of sharing the same name with that of A Pistol for Ringo along with most of the actors and the crew, is not a sequel to that film and deals with an entirely new character and a storyline.[4] It also stars Fernando Sancho, Nieves Navarro, George Martin, Antonio Casas, and Hally Hammond.

Set in the aftermath of the American Civil War, Captain Montgomery Brown (nicknamed Ringo) returns to his hometown to find it taken over by a group of treacherous renegades and his family murdered. At the risk of being recognized due to his high social class, Ringo disguises himself as a wandering peasant in order to observe the new order in town and use it against those who run it, exacting both justice upon its evildoers and get revenge in the long run.

The Return of Ringo was released in December 1965 in Italy.[5] The film was the third highest-grossing film in Italy in 1965 behind For a Few Dollars More and A Pistol for Ringo.[5]

From contemporary reviews, the Monthly Film Bulletin that the film's story is "treated with an imagination unequaled in other Italian Westerns." The review continued that "what makes the film more than merely clever is the handing of its theme: as in the second half of The Odyssey, the hero-treated by all as dead-has to rediscover his identity." The review during the film's climax and ending "Tessari shiningly confirms his sense of the poetic."[6] "Hawk." of Variety described the film as "fair-to-middlin'" noting the cliches the film had, but that Tessari "keeps things lively, alternating action alternating action and humor" while noting the violence in the film "bordered on sadism."[7] "Hawk." found the film to be superior to A Pistol for Ringo.[7]

All'inizio della lavorazione la scheda del film, del genere western all'italiana, ebbe un altro titolo che fu pensato per rendere pi esplicito il richiamo all'Odissea e la titolazione provvisoria con la quale si inizia a girare L'Odissea dei lunghi fucili. Ma dopo il successo di Una pistola per Ringo il regista ed i produttori decisero di cambiarlo in Il ritorno di Ringo, anche se le storie non hanno elementi in comune.

Due mesi dopo il termine della Guerra di Secessione, Montgomery Brown detto "Ringo", torna a casa dopo aver combattuto per l'esercito unionista nella guerra. Subito si accorge per che le cose non sono pi quelle di una volta: banditi messicani capitanati dal violento Esteban Fuentes, tiranneggiano da tempo sulla citt. Tutti coloro che in passato si erano opposti alla loro prepotenza sono stati uccisi, compreso il padre di Ringo, funzionario governativo; inoltre, il fratello di Esteban, il feroce Francisco Fuentes, detto "Paco", ricatta la moglie di Ringo, Hally, per tenerla vicino a s, minacciandone costantemente la figlia piccola.

Per non farsi riconoscere e poter cos studiare il da farsi, Ringo si fa crescere la barba e la tinge di nero, assieme ai capelli, fingendosi un messicano al servizio di Miosotis, l'esile tuttofare cittadino, brontolone ma di buon cuore. Paco vorrebbe sposare Hally, che tuttavia temporeggia, dicendo che non potr risposarsi fino a che suo marito, disperso, non torner dalla guerra, o non si avranno prove certe della sua morte. Esteban, per aiutare il fratello, paga un militare per fingere la morte di Ringo in guerra, obbligando cos la sua vedova a cedere ed acconsentire a risposarsi con il fratello Paco. Ringo non ha pi tempo ed costretto ad agire, ma a causa di una ferita alla mano destra (infertagli da Paco, che lo aveva scambiato per un ladro) si fa aiutare da Miosotis, che lo allena a sparare con la mano sinistra e dall'indiano Mimbreno; a loro si unir anche lo sceriffo, un uomo di indole pacifica, innamorato di Rosita, ballerina del Saloon e donna di Esteban; quest'ultimo, arrestato con i suoi uomini dallo sceriffo, verr liberato da Rosita e, dopo aver ucciso lo sceriffo, correr ad aiutare Paco, caduto in un agguato di Ringo nel giorno del matrimonio. Dopo aver scoperto che lo sceriffo morto e che i banditi si sono rifugiati in una villa, Ringo chiama a raccolta tutti i cittadini, organizzando una vera sommossa popolare; l'ex militare guider un attacco in forze alla villa, salvando la figlia e liberando il paese dai banditi.

Il film venne girato interamente in Spagna: sia le scene della villa della famiglia Brown (la Can Fbregas) che quelle del villaggio dove arriva Ringo vennero realizzate presso Esplugues de Llobregat (nella provincia di Barcellona). Le scene interne vennero invece girate ai PC Balcazar Studios di Madrid. Il regista Duccio Tessari compare in alcune scene nella parte di uno dei banditi.

With my viewing this morning of THE RETURN OF RINGO, I complete the list of essential top twenty films as voted on by fans of the Spaghetti Western Database. I finally found an English dubbed version(Youtube has an Italian and an Italian with German subtitles). In the only official sequel to A PISTOL FOR RINGO. As was the custom of that time in Italian cinema, other films piggybacked off successful franchises hoping to rake in extra bucks.

Ringo dyes his hair and goes into town undercover as a Mexican peasant. He has to find out what happened to his wife. He knows the lay of the land now, but a sign on the saloon reinforces it; No gringos, endios, or bums.

Ringo takes a job with Morning Glory((Manuel Muniz), the florist and as such gets into his old home preparing for the coming wedding. To satisfy the Catholic Church, the Fuentes brothers have arranged to have a casket brought in bearing the body of the late Montgomery Brown, the hero that fell in the war, and accorded him a commiserate funeral with all the trappings. Ringo spies Estaban paying off the fake U.S. soldier that drove the wagon. Access to his home affords him a chance to set up some things.

Ringo appears as himself, in full uniform, to disrupt the wedding and the battle is on. The final assault on his ranch to rescue his daughter, who he learns is named Elizabeth after his mother, is well orchestrated with the familiar acrobatics, the peculiar weapons central to many spaghetti westerns, and the heroics of our hero.

I have seen only one or two of these. I have come to the conclusion that my attention is now too fractured to watch a movie on TV. I always have a book and my Ipad with me and end up only half watching it. Yes, my brain is now rewired.
