PhD Position "Text Mining” @ Göttingen University

The Institute of Computer Science/Göttingen Centre for Digital Humanities (GCDH) at the Georg-August-University Göttingen and the Göttingen State and University Library (SUB) invite applications for a PhD candidate in the area of natural language processing. The position is open with immediate effect for 3 full years (36 months) part-time (75% full-time equivalent, currently 29.85 hours/week). An extension to full-time (100%, currently 39.80 hours/week) is possible and requires a willingness to build a text and data mining corpus for the SUB. Renumeration is according to the German TV-L 13 pay-scale.

The PhD student will be embedded in an interdisciplinary team at the GCDH consisting of computational linguists, computer scientists and digital humanists. He or she will work in the project "Data Narratives", which is concerned with developing innovative technology for analysing and mining the large collections of scientific literature held by the SUB. The project is supervised jointly by Prof. Caroline Sporleder and Prof. Wolfram Horstmann. The candidate is strongly encouraged to work towards a PhD thesis in the project context.

Tasks:
--------
- development, implementation and evaluation of algorithms for analysing natural language texts, in particular text mining of and information extraction from scientific publications
- dissemination of research results at conferences and in scientific publications

Requirements:
-------------------
- excellent postgraduate degree (Master or equivalent) in a relevant area, especially Computational Linguistics, Computer Sciences, or Linguistics
- sound knowledge of natural language processing algorithms
- excellent knowledge of at least one programming language (e.g. Java or Python) and experience with implementing NLP algorithms
- excellent command of English
- independence, ability to learn quickly, and excellent communication skills
- willingless to work in an interdisciplinary context

Desired:
-----------
- experience with statistical models and machine learning methods
- interest in philosophy of science or history of science

The position is suitable for part-time work.
