Plot Summary

The film begins in 2003, when Harvard student Mark Zuckerberg (Eisenberg) breaks up with his girlfriend Erica Albright (Rooney Mara) after a heated argument. He returns to his dorm room and creates a website called Facemash, which allows users to compare the attractiveness of female students. The website becomes popular, but also causes a campus-wide outage and gets Zuckerberg into trouble with the university administration.

Zuckerberg is approached by twins Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss (Hammer) and their business partner Divya Narendra (Minghella), who want him to work on their idea of a social networking site for Harvard students called Harvard Connection. Zuckerberg agrees, but secretly works on his own project with his friend Eduardo Saverin (Garfield), who provides the initial funding. They launch the site, called The Facebook, in February 2004.

The Facebook expands to other universities and attracts the attention of entrepreneur Sean Parker (Timberlake), who becomes an adviser and introduces Zuckerberg to Silicon Valley investors. Saverin becomes unhappy with the direction of the company and his role in it, especially after Parker convinces Zuckerberg to move the company to California and dilute Saverin's share. Meanwhile, the Winklevoss twins and Narendra sue Zuckerberg for stealing their idea.

The film alternates between two lawsuits: one filed by Saverin against Zuckerberg for breach of contract, and one filed by the Winklevoss twins and Narendra against Zuckerberg for intellectual property theft. The film ends with Zuckerberg settling both cases out of court, paying Saverin $650 million and giving him a 5% stake in Facebook, and paying the Winklevoss twins and Narendra $65 million. The final scene shows Zuckerberg refreshing his Facebook page, hoping for a response from Albright.
