We finalized the fall calendar of events and are preparing in full swing for the Jókai200 event series this weekend. With so many options to choose from, we trust you will find a program that you would like to attend. Come! We await you with love! operetta.

Jókai200 Bicentenárium / Bicentennial Event Series

October 3rd - 5th

Celebrating the 200th anniversary of acclaimed Hungarian writer, Mór Jókai with theater and presentations. A cherished figure to Hungarians not only because he laid the foundation of the nation's modern prose literature with his work, but Jókai's personality is also indisputably intertwined with the works he created and who he was as a public figure in his lifetime.

Supported by Tulipán Foundation, Arany János Hungarian Language School, Hungarian Parent Teacher Association, Hungarian Scouts in Exile - NYC troops #7 Erős Gusztáv and #46 Bánffy Kata, and the American Hungarian Library and Historical Society.

A musical prose event featuring salon music of the era and Mór Jókai's Gypsy Baron operetta, The Ketten a Versben Duo will guide the audience on a lively literary journey exploring the author's deep philosophical thoughts as his patriotic poems beckoning independence alternate between melodies.

Based on the life work of Attila József, prose spanning 250 years of Hungarian literary history will highlight works from Mór Jókai, János Pilinszky, Antal Szerb, Béla Hamvas, and Teréz Brunszvik, illuminating the eternal spirituality hidden in Hungarian literature and the modernity emerging from Hungarian tradition through poetry, letters and diaries.

Jókai200 Bicentennial Weekend: Weekend arts and literature series in honor of Jókai Mór and his lasting impact on Hungarian society. Supported by the Tulipán Foundation, the American Hungarian Library and Historical Society, and the Janos Arany Hungarian Language School.



  • October 15, Wed 5pm: “Hungarian Roots & American Dreams book launch and roundtable discussion with the writer and contributors Elizabeth Lukács Chesla, Elyse Craft, Lisa Levitt, and Christine Portnoy. Event co-produced with the Hungarian Consulate of New York, moderated by dr. Andrea Novák, Diaspora Consul.
  • October 19, Sun 7pm: Celebrate Operetta with She Loves Me (Illatszertár), joint-fundraising event for Hungarian House and Blue Hill Troupe - Kings County Tennis League. With music in English, and a special homage performance in Hungarian.
  • October 24, Fri (Time TBC): Honoring the 1956 Hungarian Uprising.
  • October 27, Mon 7pm: Transylvanian Hungarian Folk Dance workshop with Gábor and Hajni Kecskés. Focus on Szilágyság and Partium regions. Co-organized with Hungarian Folklife Association.
  • October 31, Fri 8pm: What's Up at Home, an evening of humor magyarul with Máté Lencz, Abigél Ress, and Daniel Gaál.
  • November 4, Tues 7:30pm: "Radnóti Miklós: The Notebook from Bor" performance and discussion with actor-producer András Sütő. Supported by the Liszt Institute.
