About the Event - Részletek
A 6-part series of Tuesday evening Hungarian folkdance workshops.
(You may attend any number of sessions.)
Come along and gain insight into the world of three iconic Hungarian dance regions:
Southern Great Plain, Kalotaszeg and Mezőség.
You will be introduced to each region in 2-2-2 week format, emphasizing primarily on couple dances.
(No partner needed – participants will switch partners to practice.)
The goal is not deep technical perfection, but rather to get to know the character, mood and basic movements of the dances - so that participants leave with experience, a sense of success and usable knowledge.
Recommended for all those who:
• are interested in Hungarian folk dance,
• would like to learn couple dance,
• long for cultural experience, movement and community,
• even complete beginners.
What is a csárdás?
The csárdás is one of the best-known and most widespread Hungarian folk dances found in almost every region – yet it is a little different everywhere. It takes its name from the old village inns where these dances were born and lived. Csárdás is typically a couple dance, in which the play, dynamics, and connection between partners play an important role. Slower, rocking parts alternate with more energetic, spinning sections, making the csárdás elegant, passionate, and liberated at the same time.
It is not choreography, but a live dialogue between two people where every dance is a little different.
Why come?
Imagine that in a room in the heart of New York, time stops for a moment and the rhythm of another world begins to beat. Six weeks, three regions, countless spins, laughter, and “aha!” experiences.
It doesn't matter where you come from or how much you've danced before –
here, movement, music and the experience as a couple are the key.
If you want to:
• break away from everyday life,
• experience a new culture in your body,
• connect with others through movement,
..... then this course is for you! Come by and give it a try!
---------------------------------------------------------------------
• érdeklődnek a magyar néptánc iránt,
• kiszakadni a hétköznapokból,
• új kultúrát megélni a testedben,
• kapcsolódni másokhoz mozgáson keresztül,
akkor ez a kurzus neked szól!

Dániel Horváth’s Background
My goal is to make the wonderful world of Hungarian folk dance accessible, lovable, enjoyable and interesting for everyone.
I was introduced to Hungarian folk music and dance as a small child, and it has played an important role in my life ever since. I started dancing at the age of five within the walls of the Szeged Dance Ensemble, and during the eighteen years I spent there, I was able to work with the country's leading choreographers and dancers. I started my high school studies at the Tömörkény István High School and Art Vocational High School, studying theater dance, and then continued for a year at the Nádasi Ferenc High School of the Hungarian Academy of Dance, studying folk dance and theater dance. Finally, in 2013, I obtained my OKJ Theater Dance degree in Szeged. Since 2017, I have been a folk dance student at the Hungarian Academy of Dance. During my studies, I was able to see how I fit with several dance styles, but folk dance has always remained my first choice.
In 2010, my friends and I founded the Suhancok dance company, which birthed and nurtured our shared choreography and ideas for stage productions. Our goal is to make the wonderful world of Hungarian folk dance accessible and enjoyable for both younger and older generations. Our choreography is rooted in authentic presentation, but today's more modern musical background also appears. Since 2016, I have been leading children's and youth groups within the framework of the Tiszavirág Folk Dance Association in Szeged, Deszk, and other surrounding communities, as well as in Vojvodina.
I consider the education of Hungarian folk dance to be very important for all age groups, because in this way we pass on an ancient force that has excellent community-building power and strengthens the sense of belonging. I consider it my life's goal and mission to introduce as many people as possible to this special treasure.
