Susan,

The Hungarian Lobby is above political parties and is attempting to serve only the interest of the whole nation, including our minorities. In today's polarized Hungary, any criticism of Viktor Orbán is viewed as support for the political opposition. This makes it difficult for the HL to take positions on many issues. For example it is this reason why HL did not speak up against the disastrous signing of a 15 year duration secret contract to purchase Russian natural gas (a gas that is 25 times more harmful than carbon dioxide). I could go on with such examples, but the bottom line is,that as long as the Hungarian public views all issues as either pro-government or pro-opposition, HL can only serve the allnational interest, by staying silent on such issues.

Best regards, Béla Lipták

I follow the Hungarian Lobby's work, I had the impression that it works to advance the human rights of national minorities and supports their local autonomy. Today I read in the New York Times that the Pope is visiting Hungary for 7 hours and Slovakia for 3 days and that this is because Francis disagrees with the anti-democratic and anti-EU steps of PM Orbán and with his lip service to minority rights, while acting against their interests by making enemies in the democratic world and friends among eastern dictators.
I write all this, because the silence of the HL on these issues. Is the HL on the side of Orbán, does it not care that by making enemies in the democratic world (including the Pope), he is hurting the Hungarian minorities in places like Slovakia? Does the HL agree with Orbán, that the interests of Hungarians are better served by the friendship with eastern dictators than with people like the Pope.

Can you explain this?

Dear Brother Béla!
On the one hand, what you write about HL is completely understandable.
On the other hand, it is still unsustainable that due to the harsh polarization of Hungarian society, HL is paralyzed on important issues as well.
It would be necessary to find a strong, third-party resolution method as soon as possible.
Your sincerely:
Béla Simonyi
