Dear Friends

Please send this appeal on behalf of Enes Hocaoğulları. He has been charged with ‘publicly disseminating misleading information’ and ‘inciting the public to hatred and enmity.’ These charages are based solely on a short speech he gave at a Council of Europe conference. Enes is in prison awaiting trial. Thanks! Tilly & Guy

Dear Mr. Gökhan Karaköse,
I’m deeply worried about the arbitrary inprisonment of human rights defender Enes Hocaoğullar.  He has been held in pre-trial detention since his arrest at Ankara Esenboğan Airport on 5 August.

Enes is a youth delegate who delivered a short speech in Strasbourg. He highlighted the human rights violations that occurred at a protest about the detention ot Istanbul’s mayor on 19 March. These included the police’s use of excessive force and threats of sexual violence in custody.

His charges are obviously politically motivated. You must know that Enes’s speech is protected under Türkiye’s domestic laws, as well as international human rights law and standards codified in treaties to which Türkiye is a party.

I urge you to release Enes immediately and unconditionally.

Sincerely
