Dear Attorney General,
Defenders of the Guapinol river in Tocoa have endured much tragedy in the last year, and I am deeply concerned for their safety. On 15 June Oquelí Domínguez was killed. Five months earlier, Aly
Dominguez and Jairo Bonilla Ayala were found dead. They were members of the resistance of Guapinol against an iron ore mine. In February, six defenders of the Guapinol River learned that they faced criminal prosecution for peacefully questioning the legality of a mining project in the Carlos Escaleras National Park.
Those responsible for these murders have yet to be identified. We strongly urge the authorities to launch a thorough and impartial investigation into the attacks and to refrain from using the justice system to harass the defenders. We also ask the government to ensure their protection.
Yours sincerely,
