I notice the Molyneux family,
shared with Emily Dickinson.

And Boteler.

Then it's like going on a Cornish holiday,
tracing the Trevannions and Arundells...

<<Petrarch's poems, because of their sculpted quality and because of
Petrarch's use of EKPHRASIS--for instance in sonnet 78 where LAURA
appears as Simon's painting--which introduces the gaze into writing,

poetry, however expressive and sonorous, also employs techniques
learned from the recondite virtuosity of the Middle Ages,

<<The Oxford Classical Dictionary, states that EKPHRASIS is, "an
extended and detailed literary description of any object, real or
imaginary". This allows EKPHRASIS to be ascribed to many different
images or real visuals that occur in life. Early rhetoricians
organized this term into a rhetorical exercise, which was derived
from Aphthonius's Progymnasmata. Another description of the term
comes from the teachers of ancient rhetoric. They defined it
as, "a vivid description intended to bring the subject before
the mind's eye of the listener" ("EKPHRASIS"). In order to
compose an ekphrastic piece, an incredible amount of skill and
rhetorical knowledge was needed. They were the most advanced
"graded preparatory exercises (progymnasmata) designed to
teach basic rhetorical skills to school boys" ("EKPHRASIS").>>

<<ANYONE who grew up in the age of radio will recall a popular comedy
duo called "Bob and Ray." One of their favorite bits was a scene in
which Bob would show Ray all the photographs of his summer vacation,
accompanying them with a deadpan commentary on the interesting places
and lovely scenery. Ray would usually respond with some comments on
the quality of the pictures and their subject matter, and Bob would
invariably say at some point, as an aside to the audience, "I sure wish
you folks out there in radioland could see these pictures." Perhaps
this line sticks in my memory because it was such a rare break in the
intimacy of Bob and Ray's humor: they generally ignored their radio
listeners, or (more precisely) pretended as if the listener was sitting
with them in the studio, so fully present to their conversation that no
special acknowledgment was required. If one can imagine what it would
be to wink knowingly at someone over the radio, one can understand
the humor of Bob and Ray. One can also, I think, begin to see
something of the fascination in the problem of EKPHRASIS,
the verbal representation of visual representation.
.
This fascination comes to us, I think, in three phases or moments of
realization. The first might be called "EKPHRASTIC INDIFFERENCE," and
it grows out of a commonsense perception that EKPHRASIS is impossible.
This impossibility is articulated in all sorts of familiar assumptions
about the inherent, essential properties of the various media and their
proper or appropriate modes of perception. Bob and Ray's photographs
can never be made visible over the radio. No amount of description,
as Nelson Goodman might put it, adds up to a depiction. A verbal
representation cannot represent--that is, make present--its object in
the same way a visual representation can. It may refer to an object,
describe it, invoke it, but it can never bring its visual presence
before us in the way pictures do. Words can "cite," but never
"sight" their objects. EKPHRASIS, then, is a curiosity: it is
the name of a minor and rather obscure literary genre (poems
which describe works of visual art) and of a more general topic
(the verbal representation of visual representation) that
seems about as important as Bob and Ray's radio photographs.
.
The minority and obscurity of EKPHRASIS has not, of course, prevented
the formation of an enormous literature on the subject that traces it
back to the legendary "Shield of Achilles" in the Iliad , locates its
theoretical recognition in ancient poetics and rhetoric, and finds
instances of it in everything from oral narrative to postmodern poetry.
This literature reflects a second phase of fascination with the topic
I will call "EKPHRASTIC HOPE." This is the phase when the impossibility
of EKPHRASIS is overcome in imagination or metaphor, when we discover
a "sense" in which language can do what so many writers have wanted it
to do: "to make us see." This is the phase in which Bob and Ray's
"radio magic" takes effect, and we imagine in full detail the
photographs we hear slapping down on the studio table (Sometimes
Bob would acknowledge this moment in a variation of his punchline:
instead of a wish, an expression of gratified desire-- "I'm sure
glad you folks could look at these pictures with us today.")
.
But the "still moment" of EKPHRASTIC hope quickly encounters a third
phase, which we might call "EKPHRASTIC FEAR." This is the moment
of resistance or counterdesire that occurs when we sense that the
difference between the verbal and visual representation might collapse
and the figurative, imaginary desire of EKPHRASIS might be realized
literally and actually. This is the moment when we realize that Bob and
Ray's "wish" that we could see the photographs would, if granted, spoil
their whole game, the moment when we wish for the photographs to stay
invisible. It is the moment in aesthetics when the difference between
verbal and visual mediation becomes a moral, aesthetic imperative rather
than (as in the first, "indifferent" phase of EKPHRASIS) a natural fact
that can be relied on. The classic expression of EKPHRASTIC fear occurs
in Lessing's Laocoon , where it is "prescribed as a law to all poets"
that "they should not regard the limitations of painting as beauties
in their own art." For poets to "employ the same artistic machinery"
as the painter would be to "convert a superior being into a doll." It
would make as much sense, argues Lessing, "as if a man, with the power
and privilege of speech, were to employ the signs which the mutes in
a Turkish seraglio had invented to supply the want of a voice.''>>

There are Beaumonts,
I wonder if they are the same family as the
playwright
Francis Beaumont.

I think there is only one family of the name.

John Perrott

>From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

John Perrott (c. 1527- September 1592) was reputed to be an
illegitimate son of King Henry VIII of England. His mother was Mary
Berkeley, one of the king's short-lived mistresses.

Although never acknowledged by the king, he and his older brother
Thomas Stucley were believed by some to have been fathered by Henry.

Perrott was married twice, first to Anne Cheyney and then to Jane
Pruet.

(quote)

Sir Henry Percy, also called

Harry Hotspur

(May 20, 1364/1366 - July 21, 1403) was the eldest son of Henry
Percy,
1st Earl of Northumberland, 4th Lord Percy of Alnwick.

His mother was Margaret Neville, daughter of Ralph Neville,
2nd Baron Neville de Raby (c. 1291 - 1367) and Alice de Audley.

His nickname is suggestive of his impulsive nature.

His date of birth is known but not the exact year of birth.

He is a major character in William Shakespeare's Henry IV, Part 1,

though in the play he is portrayed as being of the same age
as his main rival Prince Hal (Henry V of England),
when in fact he was considerably older.

Lyra, for heavens sake, find the other copy of Trelawney in the United
States, by Margaret Armstrong.

He buried them both - or actually empired one on a beach, both Byron and
Shelley - I promised my copy all over the place, and while I would send it
you, you would then need to send it to Canada then overseas and to a long
list.

She wrote it in about 1940.

It is a deceptive work, apparently simple, yet of quite formidable
appreciation on his character and his reporting on those become-Italian
poets. Indeed after Shelley's death he accompanied Bryon to Greece, and was
himself more active there while Byron shrank in all estimation, and perished
of himself, so to speak.

Rosetti saw to Trelawney's funeral, and Swinburne wrote "Shelley, Trelawney
rejoins thee here."

Trelawney's cottage is still there in Sompting. He is still dimly
remembered. This summer [writes Armstrong. Aug 1938] one ancient inhabitant
said of him

"He was a funny old fellow - he used t ring a bell to call the birds"

and another, still more ancient:

"I believe I almost remember he was buried in Rome."

I find she was a most intelligent writer on these three

Thanks - I shall look out for the book.

I've taken a look at the Trelawney family, on the web...

(quote)

1630-Edward Trelawny died

his slate slab reads "to the honest Lawyer"

transcription "Here lies an honest lawyer w Trelawney Bart Lord Bishop
of Winchester died at his Palace in Chelsea on July 19th and was buried
in ye vault belonging to his family in the Church of Pelynt August
10th. On information of his not being buried in woollen 50s, has been
paid to the parish".

Note

Instead of the normal 15th century piers and arches between the North
Aisle and the Nave , there is a classical granite arcade in the Tuscan
Doric order, erected probably by the famous Bishop Johnathan Trelawney
(of shall Trelawney Die fame).

The Trelawney Aisle

The Trelawney family moved from Alternon and this makes you wonder if
the dedication of the church has any connection with this move. Near by
is the Bishops chair. A helmet and a pair of gauntlets which belonged
to this famous family, are affixed to the wall above the arch leading
into the church, and may only be seen from the chapel itself.

The Trelawny family lived at Trelawne, an ancient mansion with a
medieval chapel situated 1 1/2 miles south east of the village towards
Looe. The house is the focal point of the Trelawne Holiday Estate.

St Nuns Well

In the Trelawny valley below Hob Park, is St Nun's Well. It is
difficult to find, it is described as a small building with a gabled
front about four feet high, leading into a kind of grotto with an
arched roof. At the farther end on the floor is a round granite basin,
carved on its exterior circumference with a series of Maltese Crosses
enclosed in rings. Into this basin the water drips from an opening at
the back, and escapes by a perforation at the bottom.

Slate Monuments

Carved slate monuments in Cornwall date from 1500 to 1727 and the craft
was evidently at its peak between 1575 and 1650. the old carvers first
cut their figures in high relief (see the Buller and Achym memorials)
but quit soon dropped this as being to difficult and worked instead in
shallow relief or incised line, so reducing the risk of flaking. One of
the finest carvers was Peter cracker who carved the likeness of William
Achym (1589),

another carver to sign his work was Anthony Colly in (1634)on a slate
panel to Cordelia Trelawney, under the window in the South Transept
(Trelawny Aisle).

Pelynt Parish Church

The name Pelynt is a corruption of the Celtic Plu-Nent which means "the
Parish of St Nonna". The Saint of the chapel (now destroyed) and the
Holy Well At Ninnies near Hobbs Park on the West Looe river, which
divides Pelynt Parish from Duloe. There was possibly a small Celtic
Monastery at Pelynt.

1086-The Manor is mentioned in the Doomsday Book. Through Marriages and
the eventual sale for £100 to Sir Giles de Cancellis of Lifton
Devon-who bestowed the manor, together with the advowson of the church
to Newenham Abbey, their Patronage was established.

1252-The Abbot of Newenham purchased a house and garden at Plenynt, for
twenty shillings from John Kylgad, and a further piece of land from
Walter de Penhelyk.

The Trelawny Family

Trelawney is a Cornish family tracing back to Saxon days.

1668-Jonathan Trelawny became Dean of St Buryan afterwards Bishop of
Rochester and one of the seven Bishops imprisoned in the Tower of
London and subject of the great Cornish song "And shall Trelawny die"

1673-Bishop Trelawny was ordained at the age of 23..

Bishop Trelawny inherited his baronetcy the debts which his Fathers
Royalist activities had incurred, but marrying an heiress, he was able
to benefit his old college at Oxford where he obtained his M.A.
financially when Wren was at work on Tom Tower.

During Monmouth's rebellion Bishop Trelawny organised the military
defence of his wavering county, and was rewarded with the bishopric of
Bristol at the age of 35.
