Descendants of Sir Henry Webb
Seventh Generation

....................................................................................................................................

10. Sir Henry Alexander Webb (John Alexander , John Alexander , William
, John , Geofrey , Henry ) was born on 11 May 1510 in Stratford,
Warwickshire, England. He died about 1544 in England.

It was said that Sir Henry Alexander Webb (1510-1544) established the
family for all future time, since to him the coat of arms, was granted.
This heraldic ensigna of rank in the New Nobility, that of the thegus,
owe their origin in personal service to the prince then reigning. The
New Nobility was accordingly one of office due to meritorious service.
The device of hereditary coat of armour, a growth of the twelfth
century, did much to define and mark out the noble class throughout
Europe. When once acquired by grant of the Sovereign, it went on from
generation to generation. They who possessed the right of coat of
armour formed the class of nobility or gentry.

Sir Henry Alexander Webb married Grace Arden, sister of Robert Arden.
Mary Webb (Shakespeare's grandmother) married Robert Arden, brother of
Grace.

Henry married Grace Arden, daughter of Thomas Arden, about 1533 in
Stratford, Warwickshire, England. Grace was born about 1512 in
Wilnecote, Warwickshire, England. She died on 3 Dec 1539 in Windsor,
Hertsfordshire, England.

They had the following children:

+ 13 M i Sir Alexander Webb Sr
+ 14 F ii Agnes Webb
15 M iii Henry Webb was born on 15 May 1537 in Stratford,
Warwickshire, England.

11. Mary Webb (John Alexander , John Alexander , William , John ,
Geofrey , Henry ) was born on 5 Feb 1511 in Stratford, Warwickshire,
England. She died before 1550 in Stratford, Warwickshire, England.

Mary Webb married Robert Arden and Abigail married Richard Shakespeare.
Of the first marriage Mary Arden was born and of the second marriage
John Shakespeare was the issue. These cousins, Mary Arden and John
Shakespeare married and were the parents of William Shakespeare, the
poet.

Mary married Robert Arden, son of Thomas Arden, about 1530 in
Warwickshire, England. Robert was born about 1497 in Wilnecote,
Warwickshire, England. He died on 16 Dec 1556 in Warwickshire, England.

Facts on the Shakespeare, Arden and Webb families were taken from
"William Shakespeare: A Biography" by A. L. Rowse

Sir Henry Alexander Webb

was usher in the Privy Council of Catherine Parr, Queen Regent of
Britian in the 16th century.

Catherine Parr, 6th Queen of Henry VIII of England, tactful, kindly
woman to whose influence her stepchildren, the future sovereigns Edward
VI, Mary I and Elizabeth I owed much.

Among the few existing documents connected with the regency of
Catherine Parr was one while Henry VIII was conducting the siege of
Boulogne in 1544 AD. There is in the Crotonain Collections a letter to
her council headed: Katherine, Queen Regent, K.P. in favor of her
trusty and well beloved servant, Henry Alexander Webb, gentleman, usher
of her Privy Chamber."

The letter is in regard to some grants and privileges to Henry
Alexander Webb, but which have not been fulfilled. It concludes "we
most heartily desire and pray you to be favorable to him at this our
earnest request. Given under my Hand and Signet, at my Lord, the King's
Majesty's Honor of Hampton Court, the 23d of July and the 36th of his
Highness most noble Reign."

He had the following children:

+ 2 M i Geofrey Webb
3 F ii Alice Webb

It may be that the Shakespeares and Ardens
benefited from the very close link to
Sir Henry Alexander Webb,

a man so liked and trusted by,
in fact a friend of,
Queen Katherine Parr.

As Katherine herself was stepmother to
Queen Elizabeth I,

may not Elizabeth have kept a close
friendship with, maybe,
Sir Henry's son, also Henry (knighted),

maybe too with the Shakespeare Arden clan,
though of course only as far as she
may be friends with the non-titled -
this is just the reality of royal life.

what I didn't quite realise,
but do now,

(the Arden/Shakespeare/Webb family tree is very tangled, I find
from web pages and forums discussing it)

is that Shakespeare's grandmother Mary Webb (married Robert Arden)
is the SISTER of

Sir Henry Alexander Webb,

in the retinue of
Queen Katherine Parr.

This is a very close link.

I don't know if it anyone has written of it before,
but it's interesting isn't it.

8. Sir John Alexander Webb Jr

(John Alexander , William , John , Geofrey , Henry )

was born on 16 Jan 1483 in Stratford, Warwickshire, England. He died in
England.

.................................................................................................................

Sir John was an officer of rank in the army of King Henry VIII.

He had the following children:

9 M i William Webb was born in 1509 in Stratford, Warwickshire,
England.

+ 10 M ii Sir Henry Alexander Webb

+ 11 F iii Mary Webb

+ 12 F iv Abigail Webb

.....................................................................

Mary Webb is Shakespeare's grandmother.

So, his (Shakespeare's) grandmother's brother is
Sir Henry Alexander Webb,

close to Queen Katherine Parr.

in fact, there is ANOTHER link...

Shakespeare's OTHER grandmother,
is Abigail Webb,

ALSO a sister of

Sir Henry Webb

(of Hampton Court, apparently)

...........................................................................................................

(quote, excerpts)

12. Abigail Webb

(John Alexander , John Alexander , William , John , Geofrey , Henry )
was born on 6 Jun 1515 in Stratford, Warwickshire, England.
She died in 1595.

Mary Webb married Robert Arden and Abigail married Richard Shakespeare.

Of the first marriage Mary Arden was born and of the second marriage
John Shakespeare was the issue.

These cousins, Mary Arden and John Shakespeare married and were the
parents of William Shakespeare, the poet.

Abigail married Richard Shakespeare about 1532. Richard was born in
1512 in Stratford, Warwickshire, England. He died in 1561 in Stratford,
Warwickshire, England.

Richard Shakespeare married Abigail Webb and they had a son, John
Shakespeare who married Mary Arden, the youngest child of Robert and
Mary Webb Arden.

John and Mary Shakespeare had seven children. The first two died in
infancy and the third was William Shakespeare, the greatest of the
English poets.

(quote, excerpts)

Her father was a Justice of the Court of Common Pleas in the reign of
King Henry VIII and may have helped his son-in-law's rise at court,
where, in 1516, Thomas was appointed a Gentleman Usher Extraordinary to
the King.

He would thus have spent much time attending the monarch in one of his
London palaces or at Windsor Castle.

Although, Berkshire was still his family home and, in 1518 and 28, he
was Escheator (or Crown agent) for Oxfordshire and Berkshire, as well
as being one of the Commissioners for the Berkshire Court appointed to
collect the subsidy which was levied by King Henry in 1523.

more about the Webbs, etc.

(quotes)

1.

When Henry VIII (reigned 1509-1547) separated the Church of England
from the Catholic Church, first cousins were permitted to marry. This
occurred between the Webbs, Ardens, and Shakespeares.

2.

Sir
Alexander Webb Jr., b. 20 Aug 1559 in Stratford, Warwickshire, England
d AFT. 1629 in Boston, Suffolk County, Mass.

Alexander Jr. came to America, and so did four of his sons.

3.

The WEBB Coat of Arms was granted to Sir Henry Webb while at Hampton
Court (Elizabeth I was Queen of England).

The family coat of arms is a cross gule between four eagle falcons and
border scroll, red with gilt letters, brown shadows on all, or crest
out of a ducal coronet, and a device eagle displayed. A Crown has 2 red
and 3 blue shots all gold, with red hollows, scarlet shield, and edges
light yellow. The cross shows that our ancestor was a crusader. The
hawks denote swiftness and courage. The coronet that he was fighting
under one of the confederate ducal sovereigns of France, and that he
was an officer.

The WEBB motto is " Principles not Men". " IN ALTA TENDO "

...................

Another description, copied from the back of the Webb Family Coat of
Arms states that the cross in the arms shows that the ancestor was with
King Richard Cour de Leon in the 3rd Crusade or Holy War. The falcons
are the birds of Palestine and denote swiftness and courage, and they
show that the ancestor was at one time employed in Palestine. The ducal
crown in the crest was given to those who had been in the service of
one of the sovereign dukes of The French Confederation, and the eagle
shows that the ancestor had won a battle at sea while in command of the
vessel in which it was fought.

isn't there a falcon on the Wriothesley coat of arms?

and, the one granted to the Shakespeares?
