Press Picks 2003

A full page full of categories are listed, with results of a poll determining
winners and the AP staff separate choices. See at:
http://www.anchoragepress.com/newarchives/ballot.html

Here are a few of the Food Category ones that interest me.

BEST BREAKFAST What better way to enjoy the first meal of the day than by
indulging in fine eggs benedict and taking in a fabulous art display? In an
upset, Snow City Café (1034 W. 4th Ave., 279-3954) got most of your votes this
year, with Gwennie's and Jackie's Place trailing respectably in respective
second and third places. Gwennie's has won this category every other year.
STAFF PICK - Apparently we like breakfast. So much that we picked three
egg-joints in town that steal our hearts - Gwennie's, Hogg Bros., and Leroy's.

BEST BURGER Tommy's Burger Stop (1106 W. 29th Pl., 561-5696), the tiny
independent between the pawnshop and the liquor store is our readers'
favorite. This is noteworthy because Tommy's has unseated the Arctic
Roadrunner, which has two locations and is a decades-old Anchorage
institution. To see what Tommy is up against, check out the creek-side seating
at Roadrunner's Old Seward and International location on a sunny Wednesday.
Then, to be fair, pick-up a burger to-go at Tommy's on a sunny Thursday - it's
a short drive to Earthquake Park or the beach on Lake Spenard.
STAFF PICK - We like Tommy's, too, he delivers all the way downtown!

BEST PIZZA This category may be the most predictable. Is it any surprise that
Moose's Tooth (3300 Old Seward Hwy., 258-2537) has once again claimed the
honor? It wasn't even a contest this year. Moose's Tooth, that original pizza
parlor serving up Cali-style pies and a wide array of homebrews, won with by a
landslide. Pizza Hut, came in second.
STAFF PICK - Hey, why mess with perfection? When we want 'za, we head to the
Tooth, too.

BEST SANDWICH SHOP/DELI You chose Atlasta Deli (701 W. 36th Ave.,
563-3354) for the second straight year, although it was a close competition.
The national sandwich chain, Subway, came in second by just three votes.
Atlasta, a local deli in midtown, is the kind of place you'll find oil
executives and hip twenty-somethings under one roof, munching on Philly cheese
steaks or any of the deli's many other tasty sandwiches.
STAFF PICK - Alaska Gourmet Subs is where we go for a mid-day carb attack.

BEST STEAK HOUSE Club Paris (417 W. 5th Ave., 277-6332) took its usual spot at
the top of the steak lover's list. That's six years in a row for the
forty-six-year-old downtown restaurant. Our readers also enjoy a steak at Lone
Star Steakhouse and Saloon on C Street, just south of Tudor Road, and when in
Girdwood, the carnivores gravitate toward the Double Musky Inn, a joint named
for cheap wine but known for fine dining with a New Orleans influence.
STAFF PICK - When we get a hankering for a filet, we make our way to Club
Paris, too.

BEST ITALIAN RESTAURANT there's something to be said about nouvelle Italian
cuisine, about polenta and gorgonzola and carpaccio with capers. But what
about good ol' fashioned spaghetti and meatballs and lasagna? That's why you
keep voting for Romano's (2415 C St., 276-0888) as best Italian fare - they
have it all. Orso and Sorrento's apparently make you smile, too, as they came
in second and third, respectively.
STAFF PICK - It's a toss up: sometimes we like Sorrento's and other times it's
Little Italy all the way.

BEST CHINESE RESTAURANT While we're far from the authentic tastes and smells
of any Chinatown, many of you head to Panda Restaurant (605 E. Northern Lights
Blvd., 272-3308) to quash that oriental food hankering. Last year's winner,
Twin Dragon Mongolian Bar-B-Que, snagged second place with an all-you-can-eat
buffet and a front row seat to seeing your dinner prepared.
STAFF PICK - Sing it with us now, "Twin Draaagon, Mongolian Bar-B-Que." " we
just love that commercial, and the food is pretty good to boot.

BEST JAPANESE RESTAURANT You like your steak, shrimp, veggies and lobster
prepared right before your eyes at Benihana Japanese Steak House ( 1100 W. 8th
Ave., 222-5212). But you also said that Ichiban was amongst your favorites.
Either way, you're in for a great sushi plate and fun atmosphere.
STAFF PICK - We like the authenticity of Yamato Ya, but up-and-comer Shine's,
in the mirror room at Bernie's, is no slouch, either.

BEST THAI RESTAURANT Pad Thai lovers unite and make your way to the east
side's Thai Kitchen (3405 E. Tudor Rd., 561-0082) for some damn fine noodles
and smoky Thai iced coffee. They were this year's spring-roll-flavored
favorite, although last year's winner, Thai House, gave them a considerable
run for their money. We only wish they delivered.
STAFF PICK - Thai Kitchen makes the best curry around, baby!

BEST MEXICAN RESTAURANT Year after year you've chosen La Mex as your Mexican
food place of choice. And with three locations in town, it doesn't get much
better. Plus they have prime rib and burgers, too. Coming in second this year
was everyone's favorite local quick taco fix - Taco King.
STAFF PICK - For the most authentic Mexican cuisine this side of the Border,
we head to Cilantro's, on the Park Strip.

When you're over the hill and it's Saturday night, it's not a matter of
flipping out down town but remembering the menu bb
