Anyone who's read Thucydides would answer straight away; not Thucydides.
Anyone who's read Plato would answer straight away; not Plato.
Anyone who's read Aristotle would answer straight away; not Aristotle.
Anyone who's read the surviving plays of Euripides would answer straight
away; not Euripides.

So then, the intellectual elite in Athens didn't believe in the myths;
but what about the uneducated masses, the working stiffs? Did they
believe in them, and perhaps regard the aristocratic sceptics as
strangers? Did those who condemned Socrates believe in them?

Today we have people who believe in the virgin birth of Jesus; that
Mohammed talked to archangel Gabriel in a cave; and more.

Take your pick where you want to belong.

Did myths play the role of religion in ancient Greek society?:

- Religion is regarded by the common people as true, by the wise as false, and by rulers as useful.

The myths were ever-present in the daily religious life. If you watched
Athena being invested with a new peplos, or any sacrifice at an altar to
Dionysus during a tragedy performance, the myths were in the air.
If you read the opening paragraphs of Plato's Republic, you see it on
the streets. You see Socrates walking amidst it all.

The "Greek Myths" have undergone a category change in our culture; moved
into that of literature. For the ancient Greeks they belonged firmly
under religion.
In Sparta Heracles was especially worshipped; and you can bet your
bottom dollar that many Spartans believed in the Twelve Labours as they
attended a sacrifice at his altar.
