Here's a poll -- can you indicate here if you're interested in
reading, building, or both? Even if you just want to dabble in
building, let me know so we can consider it while forming a schedule.

I'd like to do both.

Both.

Do you want to attempt common (as in, all interested members try it)
projects, or posts about projects people are working on that others
can contribute to, try out, or offer suggestions about?

Both for me too.

It might good to start with a common project or two and then post
about projects people can contribute to. Would possibly give everyone
a little bit closer baseline from which to work.

Both for me, though I have a very particular hardware project in mind
that will certainly vary from the use of the Arduino hardware. Still,
I'm interested in following along as the group plays around with such
projects.

I'd prefer both.

I've had no previous building experience but am really excited to have the chance to tinker around in a semi-structured way.

Much as I'd love to do both, I'll either be at a conference or in the
middle of moving nearly the entire time. Count me in for just
reading.

Both for me, too, and I agree that it would be a nice idea to start
with a project in common -- or at least something that demonstrates/
builds on the same principles and tools (which we could then take in
our own directions). -- Bethany

I'll probably have to stick with just reading this summer amidst other
commitments (incl. travel) that I'm juggling. I am v. much looking
forward to following along, however...

I'm really tempted by the Arduino starters kit available at http://www.adafruit.com along with the friendly tutorial also available on that site.  Also, any of you in the San Francisco Bay Area should definitely make some time this week for the Maker Faire, which should get your creative juices flowing (http://www.makerfaire.com)

So I hope to be tinkering with Arduino this summer, but I don't necessarily think a group project is the best way to motivate me; I'd rather see those of us interested in making something use this list as a way to motivate and document our own individual projects.

I'm also interested in the reading discussion, and look forward to talking with all of you about the readings!

Put me down as a reader, given my lack of building experience.

As I'll be (re)building most of a house this summer, I'll stick with
reading for the makers group.

Best,

I'm game to read and build.

I really want to wrap up some long-dormant hardware projects here (a
phase-locked loop I've been playing with, some LED illumination &
optical communication projects--all back-burnered while I was
commuting three hours a day, writing proposals, and all that). I mean
to do some of what engineers refer to as "science experiments."

I may adopt the Arduino, if I can make hard drive space for
Processing, as people are using here, and it would be opportune (big,
big if--I'll have to sacrifice the Visual C++ Express I just
installed). It looks like Arduino may be inexpensive enough.

What motivates me is a balance of my need to realize some projects
with my desire to pull my head out of my little world and see what
people are writing. They're complementary for me for now, but both are
good.

Phil
