While I originally suggested that we start reading as a group the week
of the 15th, I'm bumping us back a week in order to give everyone time
to get the book (I know they don't have the title in the GMU library).

Steve Lubar has offered to lead the discussion of David Pye's "The
Nature and Art of Workmanship" (A&C Black, 2008). We'll be reading
that book the 22nd-28th of this month, and discussing it here on the
group during that week and later.

I'm looking for some volunteers to help fill out the rest of the group
schedule (http://groups.google.com/group/humanist-makers-reading-group/
web/humanist-makers-reading-schedule).. let's try to nail this down
soon so that we have time to acquire titles and set-aside reading
time. I'll also try to contact a few of the authors to see if they're
interested in joining the group.. worth a shot, right?

I'll mention this in a separate thread, but if you're in DC on Friday
the 26th, I'm organizing a meetup in Arlington, Virginia. I hope you
can make it, and we can kick off some discussion in person!

Best,
Dave

Dave (and all) -- I'd be happy to lead discussion of Thackara's "In
the Bubble" and Sterling's "Shaping Things" (maybe even in tandem?)
but it would have to be after the week of July 6th. I'm just throwing
this out there on this list rather than editing the readings page, so
that you can mastermind exactly where in the schedule these should
appear or even (given other readings) if they're going to be useful/
interesting. -- Bethany

Hey Guys,

I would be participating more, but every time I try to log into the
Google site or look at the documents there I am getting weird error
messages. Anyone else having similar problems? If I can't resolve
them, I may just participate by putting stuff on this list.

Best,
Bill

Hi Bill and All,

I'm having problems viewing the documents in the google group as
well. Let's see if we can plan the readings on this email thread
instead.

We'll begin discussing David Pye's book on Monday, and I've
volunteered to lead the following week's discussion of Harvey
Molotch's book if others think that's a good fit. Bethany -- how
about you lead Thackara's "In the Bubble" starting July 6th? That
will take us 3 weeks into the reading group.

Here's the current schedule that I have mapped out:

June 22-28:
Pye's "The Nature and Art of Workmanship" - led by Steve Lubar

June 29-July 5:
Molotch's "Where Stuff Comes From: How Toasters, Toilets, Cars,
Computers and Many Other Things Come to Be As They Are" - led by Dave
Lester

July 6-12:
Thackara's "In the Bubble" - led by Bethany Nowviskie

July 13-19:

July 20-26:

July 27-August 2:

August 3-9:

We'll have four remaining weeks to fill in -- have suggestions, ideas,
or would you like to volunteer? Post here! I'm looking forward to
this.

How is everyone's summer going? Do people still want to discuss some
of these titles, which ones, and when? I'm cool with relaxing the
schedule a bit; after all, I took a little time-off myself. The
previous schedule is out of date at this point.
