Dear All
I am very pleased to announce that the Human Ecology Section symposium
proposal has been accepted for ESA Pittsburgh. This is a significant
achievement for our section and one we should all be proud of helping
to achieve. Thank you for your input and we look forward to seeing you
all there.
This group list has been understandably quiet but Erle and I hope to
stimulate more discussion across it as we lead up to the conference.
We hope to use the symposium to raise the profile of the section,
increase its membership and to create momentum beyond the day (see
other postings here, for example on us contributing to ESA debate on
"Planetary Stewardship"). Realistically though, not much will happen
until after Christmas and the New Year. So, best wishes for the season
- I trust you are enduring the heat as stoically as myself and I will
dedicate at least one cold beer today to your wellbeing.
Cheers
Rob Dyball

excellent job on the symposium!
Sounds like you're enjoying your Australian summer - wish I were
there!

This is great!!  Sorry for the delay; we're on Xmas break and I'm on the road.

Maybe we should have a real human ecology 'reception' at ESA this time (in addition to a business/lunch meeting), e.g.....send an invitation out to everyone, have some appetizers, maybe wine.....(?).  I think that Katherine would help us set it up.  I would throw in $25 --- maybe other people and institutions would too.

Cheers,
Rich

Good to hear from you. Happy New Years.

Rob Dyball is the section chair and has all of the information. I see
his name on the list, so you should hear back from him soon.

Cheers,
Rich

Hi Rich.

How are you? What are your plans for the future?

Let me say you that next week two new colleagues will join my Department; they are physical anthropologist Sudip Datta and social anthropologist Lane Fargher, India and USA citizens respectively.

We have 3 more free positions and I would like to ask you for help identifying suitable candidates to occupy them.

In few days I will send you a brief description of the profile of researchers we are looking for.

Are you going to visit Mexico en the near future? How is the international program in COA? Do you know where the next conference of SHE will be hold?

Are you having cold temperatures? Here in Merida we are about 20° Centigrades and has been raining for about 12 hours.

I wish you

A HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Information on the Human Ecology symposium is available from the google group site for the section as an uploaded file. You will find other material there, including the invitation to discuss how the section might contribute to ESA's "Planetary Stewardship" initiative.
Information on ESA meeting, including submission dates etc, is at http://www.esa.org/pittsburgh/
The section itself will at least hold a mixer and there will be a business meeting in addition to the symposium. We did not go ahead with a poster session but we would still welcome suggestions for any additional activity that we might undertake as a group, including increasing membership and profile raising.
Incidently, from time to time folks are replying to this group list when they intend to be having a one-to-one conversation. If the subject has Human Ecology @ ESA in the finding line then the message has come from the group list, not the individual, so if you reply to it everyone will see your message.
Cheers
Rob

Federico

I was hoping to make it to the Yucatan this spring, but my wife's
(Patricia) father is doing poorly, and I'm afraid we can't make any
travel plans right now. It sounds like things are doing well at
CINVESTAV -- active and adding positions.

I urge you to send the position announcements to Scott Wright, the new
exec. director of SHE. He is about to send out a newsletter to SHE
members, and it would be a good way to get news of your openings to
others.

It is very cold here in Maine right now -- I wish I could be in warm,
sunny Mexico now.

Cheers,
Rich

Hi Yogani
Maybe Arnim Wiek or someone else from the School of Sustainablity at ASU? Perhaps Thomas Elmqvist from Stockholm Resilience Centre if it doesn't have to be USA

Cheers
Rob

Yogani,
I can recommend Kristen Nelson.  She's a social scientist at the University of Minnesota, and is working on a few urban-ecology projects right now:  k...@umn.edu
She's got a bio and links to her faculty webpage at www.tchep.umn.edu
Best,
Daniel

I would suggest Stephen Gasteyer, a sociologist at Michigan State who is doing extensive work on urban ag and urban green redevelopment.  Has a very broad perspective and works frequently with ecologists and others.

Best,
Tom
