Subject: [Jdm-society] Manipulation check for cognitive load

Hi all,
A week ago I asked if anyone had any ideas for a manipulation check on
cognitive load in an online study. Thank you to those who responded! Here
is a summary of the suggestions:
1. Adding math questions. Performance on math quizzes has been shown to be
affected by cognitive load, but not consistently so. In one study, addition
performance was not affected, but multiplication performance was.
See Benjamin, Brown, and Shapiro (Journal of the European Economic
Association, 2013,
http://dx.doi.org/10.1111/jeea.12055), and Deck and
Jahedi (European Economic Review, 2015,
http://dx.doi.org/10.1111/10.1016/j.euroecorev.2015.05.004).
2. Asking participants to report back the string of digits or letters they
were asked to memorize. See van 't Veer, A. E., Stel, M., & van Beest, I.
(2014). Limited capacity to lie: Cognitive load interferes with being
dishonest, Judgment and Decision Making, 9, issue 3, p. 199-206.
3. Adding simple grammatical judgments.
Thank you again!
Sincerely,
Stav
