Print panos (cheap) at drugstore Kiosk?

Hi All,

I'd like to photographically print panos for posting on a physical bulletin board.

--> Could someone create (or point me to) a How-To about splitting a pano up into standard photo kiosk print size segments for printing on a drugstore Kodak photo kiosk?

It seems more economical to use a series of smaller prints (close to the panos height) and then attach them together on the back?

→ A related note. How do I know what size to set Hugins canvas to (output size?) in order to use the web pano print service sizes.

(I don't want to print a postage stamp size image on a huge sheet of photo paper.)

Is there a standard for how pixels relate to inches, when printing digital photos?

I've tried fiddling with Hugins canvas settings (Optimize = W:8468, H:3559), and Photoprint, without success.

I wonder if my Hugin settings are not producing a large enough output pano image?

I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 Linux.

Thanks for your input and time.

You may find it cheaper to batch up multiple panos onto a larger banner
print, see below.

I wouldn't try doing it in Hugin. Use Inkscape or GIMP.

300 dots(pixels)-per-inch is standard photoprinter output. Most print
actually print higher resolutions (my old Canon photoprinter printed
4800dpi on glossy or matte photo paper), but they bunch their color
output into 16x16 squares of separate color dots to make better color mixes.

My DLSR is 6mpx (2000x3000 pixels), printed image about 6.6"x10".

I just printed three panoramas at our local CostCo store. They offer a
20x60" (6000x18000 pixels) banner print. So I did an Inkscape layout of
those dimensions with three panoramas (longest one was a little over
54") that filled the 20" height with a bit of whitespace between them.
Exported that as an 6000x18000-pixel image and printed that image. Then
just cut them apart. Cost $16.99 here in Hawaii, might be cheaper in
other parts of the US. Don't know about prices outside the US.

Probably not. I haven't tried to learn much about resizing images in
Hugin, but isn't it kind of locked to the size of the panorama itself? I
don't really know how Hugin derives final image size from image and
crop. I guess you can set it to maximum crop and adjust, switching back
and forth between preview and Stitch tabs to figure out the cropped
image size. The maximum might depend on what projection you're using.

Using Aptosid, 2013-01, updated as needed.

Thank you, GnomeNomad for your words of wisdom.

I opened my pano in GIMP and discovered it was 23" wide, so I reduced it to 13.5" wide in order to print on my inkjet using legal paper.

I found a website selling a 1K roll of 8.5 inkjet paper for $17.00.  I also discovered Office Depot will print large/wide media for $1.99 a square foot.

Because this is only my 2nd pano (with a pocket point and shoot) I'll need a better camera (DSLR) and more practice before I want to spend $$$$$ printing my creations.  Right now the inkjet output is enough to make me say wow, cool and motivate me to keep improving.

Thank you, GnomeNomad.

If you've got a Canon Powershot, you might be surprised by the
quite-good lens quality of some of their models.

I've gotten some interesting panos using my cheap little cellphone at
640x480, here are some:

Having any kind of camera handy is a Good Thing™!

You're welcome!

A friend has a Canon 13x19" photoprinter. It's $1 per page just for
paper, and uses a lot of ink.

Yesterday I printed a 12x18 at CostCo using 2 of my beach panos (resized
down in Inkscape) with some added text as a Valentine's Day card for my
wife. It cost $1.43. Hard to beat the price difference!

1) Yep, I do use a Cannon Powershot (590IS) with CHDK firmware.
2) I mistyped and intended to say, I found a 100 foot roll of 8.5 inkjet paper (not 1K feet) at graytex.com
3) However, I had forgotten about the gallons of ink my printer uses.  Hummm, I may look into getting a Costco card.  Or go to Office Depot.

Thanks again,

You have higher resolution (8MP) than my DSLR.

According to DPReview (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/Q408budgetgroup/3):

"excellent edge to edge detail across the zoom range"

I read that to mean you got one of the models with a good lens.

Still useful.

You might try one of your long prints on that and see how the ink use
goes, since you've already bought the ink. ;-)
