hello,

i really like using assistant for my workflow. unfortunately for the stitching phase i always switch to expert mode because assistant does not give me an option to compute the optimal size for my panorama.

or perhaps i am doing something wrong?

thank you,

Maybe not using expert mode all the time? What problems do you have
with it?

The assistant is calculating the optimal size as last step. See the log
<snip>
Searching for best crop...
Calculate optimal size of panorama
Setting canvas size to 3451 x 3203
Searching for best crop rectangle
Set crop size to 235,224,3216,1883
</snip>

Also when you press the create button, the optimal size is calculated and given as start point.

By default the assistant is using 70 % of the 1:1 scaling. Higher pixel numbers don't show more details and are increasing only the processing time.
If you want to nevertheless higher pixel numbers, you can change this factor in the preferences, tab assistant.

Thank you, Thomas.

So based on what you're saying the "Calculate Optimal Size" button inside Expert interface/Stitcher menu always gives 1:1 scaling but since there is no real benefit I will keep the 70 % scaling and just use the Assistant.

Just a suggestion: maybe it would not be a bad idea to somehow include the recommended 70 % (I know it's the default, but not for the Expert mode) downscale setting directly in the Hugin UI.

You are the first one which propose this. Until now all request were to ignore or remove the 70 % downscale option.
But this is currently yet possible: When you press the "calculate optimal size" button with pressed control button the downscale option from the preferences is used.

Great! This possibility should be visible in the GUI.
