Dear Mac users,

Ippei Ukai built a new Universal 4 CPU build. (My builds are Universal 2 CPU i386/ppc builds). This build from Ippei is for i386/ppc/x86_64/PPC64. This means that this Hugin runs in 64bit mode on 64 bit systems (G5, Xeon, or 64bit Core 2). Running in 64 bit has the following advantages:
  • In theory the application runs faster. In practice it turns out that most source packages are not optimized (yet) for 64 bit and do not make optimal use of multi-core processors (yet). So the speed advantage may vary.
  • You can create huge panorama's (> 2GB) due to 64bit memory addressing.
As most builds came from me the past months we decided to publish them via my website as than one is, by now, relatively well known.

Information and binaries via my website <http://panorama.dyndns.org/index.php?lang=en&subject=Hugin&texttag=Hugin>.
(The binaries itself are, as always, served from hugin.panotools.org who kindly provide the disk space and bandwidth).

Kind regards,
Ippei Ukai and Harry van der Wolf

PS: Some statistics about the latest builds for those who are interested. Note that these are "distinct" downloads as some users (ip-addresses) download more than once (by accident?). These multiple downloads have been filtered out.

Big thanks to Harry for posting and publishing.

Just in case, because pixels aren't represented in 64bit, even in
theory 64bit wouldn't be faster. The only case there may be a large
enough difference would be G5 which benefits from the CPU specific
tuning.

Oh, and all Core 2 models have 64bit support, but not all Xeon do,
although all Xeon on Mac do. In other words, only Core Duo/Solo
processors on Intel Mac are 32bit only.

I have also the tools such as autopano-sift-c, matchpoint,
align_image, nona, enblend etc. compiled as standalone. Available on
request.

agreed! thanks to you both for the OS X development. us mac users
really do appreciate it!

ippei, i'd like to have the standalone binaries.

Hi Michael,

I publish Ippei's standalone binaries tonight. Just didn't have the time to do that.

Hello,

Reporting on MacMini OS 10.4.11...

My svn3073 (and some earlier versions) quit with one pto file when
optimising alignment, hence I upgraded to this svn3176 build. The
issue with hugin closing down is gone.

However, in the panorama preview the sliders do not work, one cannot
grab and move them. To resize, one has to open the stitcher tab and
type in the values. The sliders then change position.
Wrote a followup for [ 1981189 ] HFOV and VFOV sliders don't work
anymore

One more thing: with past svn versions, it usually worked to hit
Carriage Return after entering a value to have it recognised, now it
is the well-known old behaviour that one has to click into a different
value box to have the value entered.

Cheers

Ippei, Harry,

Thanks for this - I am really looking forward to being able to build
huge panos with HugIn!

I downloaded this version and installed it on my PowerMac G5

It started a new project OK but when I got to the Images tab and
clicked "Create Control Points" it told me that it could not find
Auto-Pano / Autopano-sift-c.

I saved the .pto file and reopened it with the older 3133 version and
it seems to be happy with arrangements for Auto-Pano.

So my question is ... In order to use this new version do I need to
install the standalone Auto-Pano / Autopano-sift-c and if so does it
matter where? and how do I tell Hugin how to find it?

all the best

George

Still on holiday, but today with access to internet.

to George:
Ippei built the 3176 without autopano-sift-c, panomatic and matchpoint (which I always do). If you know how to "open" a package in Finder, you can copy autopano-sift-c from my 3133 version to Ippei's version. It is in Hugin.app/Contents/Resources.

to Klaus:
I issued the bug [ 1981189 ]  you replied on. When I'm back from holiday (next week) I will write a patch for it. I patched it in my 3133 (and 3122 also?) build, but as I wasn't sure it would work for every OSX user I did not yet commit a patch to the trunk. Off course Ippei did not know of "my own little hack".

I'm back again after a month or so, and trying to make hugin work on
my powermac G5 10.4.11
I downloaded vs 3176, along with the stand-alone components. Pointed
to autopano-sift and enblend in prefs, and quickly built up a new pano
project from new pics (got a nikon 10.5mm lens recently!). All is
grand, align runs well, then with a few control point mods and
optimization, preview looks great, assistant reports "good fit".

BUT nothing happens when I hit the "create panorama" button in the
assistant or "stitch now" in the stitcher panel. I just have normal
"blended panorama" checked - everything else not mentioned is default
in settings. No crash, no visible reaction - except for the button
turning blue...

I wonder if there is something I can "flush" from a previous problem
install? Is there any log I can look for? Any specific tests i can run
to isolate the problem? Can I run this final command from the
terminal to circumvent the gui and learn something?

I really want to run with this - it's so promising up to this point,
and a great open-source project, but in 3 versions and 4 or more sets
of pics I can't get around this last stage - sometimes after quite a
bit of tweaking time :( Can't think what makes my system different.

Thanks for the time!

Sean,

Your problem sounds like something that I noticed when I first
downloaded this new version.

I found that it stopped happening when I took all spaces out of all
file and folder names.

So if your project is in a folder called:
Pano project one
change its name to Pano_project_one
and try again.

Also check the Console program in Your Utilities folder for error
messages. From what I remember I got a message there when I had the
problem (unfortunately I am using a different computer today and so
don't have access to the Console from when I was getting a similar
problem).

all the best

Thanks for the ideas George.
I did have a space in this folder layout, so I eliminated that and
opened the project again. however, I do have the app in a folder with
a space - I'll try that next!
I do have a console log the gist of which is "error 13" here goes for
those that might glen something from it:

Success!
Although it wasn't the space in the app folder (I don't think). Truth
is I wasn't very scientific, But I moved and stripped prefs and
changed settings, and got a nona export and then somehow the blended
pano output started working.
For anyone interested:
http://adairproductions.com/photo/pano/graffiti_fest/graffiti_fest.html

Starts very zoomed in on a mural - you guys will know how to zoom out.
It is a full spherical projection. the audio in the bg should be more
compressed, and everything may not load smoothly on a slower
connection.
Blend was pretty good! One walking person got a bit frankenstein - arm
connected to someone else's leg. I have to look at custom controls
there to see if I can force areas (there was plenty of overlap here).
This guy appears 3x since he was moving in the direction of my
shooting.

Workflow notes: Handheld vertical single row with nikon d70 and 10.5mm
full frame fisheye lens. Minimal custom work in hugi, after making
sure lens settings were good (exif handled most. Deleted one auto
control point and optimized.
Resulting pano went to cubic converter. Took top and bottom faces of
cubes to photoshop. I had an exposed sky frame, but I was too lazy to
put it in this time. ended up stamping in the OE sky. I did use my
bottom shot, although it got a lot of stamping too - cut out my legs,
left some shadow reflection of me in there. QTVR output from cubic
converter with new faces, page and audio added in Pleinpot.

OK - it's rough. More refined work is forthcoming! Here's some earlier
less gritty work before hugin - but these files are much bigger than
they have to be...
http://adairproductions.com/photo/pano/angel-orensanz/AOpano.html
handheld with 18mm lens on d70, lots of work to get the dome of this
old synagogue in place using an old version of stitcher.
http://adairproductions.com/markawasi/
has a bunch of cylindricals from a remote site of stone formations
(13,000ft in Peru). These also are large and need to be optimized...
Lots to learn - I'm a video guy first!

Thanks Harry - yes that worked - but I'd guess that you knew it would!

I mention it only for the benefit of others who might benefit from
reassurance.

What I forgot to mention (simply because I forgot myself) is that Ippei built three sets of stand-alone tools, also 4-way CPU, so also 64bit (on a 64bit OS off course). If you download these sets, you can unpack them to a place of your liking and than refer to these tools from the preferences window.
