I've been trying to use Hugin to generate a few panoramas, and I've
been encountering this error:
"C:/Program Files/Hugin/bin/checkpto" "C:/Users/lewisd/AppData/Local/
Temp/ha5338.tmp"
Optimise project...
make: *** Access is denied.
. Stop.
make: *** Waiting for unfinished jobs....

I had some luck by running Hugin as administrator, and making some of
the programs run as administrator, but it still doesn't seem to solve
the problem. Most recently, I've changed hugin.exe, make.exe, and
checkpto.exe to all run as administrator, but it still isn't working.
Any suggestions for trying to get this working?

    Hi Derek,
I have some clues for what may be your problem.
I find similar problems - while using Windows - because of the settings of my Comodo "Internet Security Premium" (antivirus+firewall+"defense+"[=anti-spyware, anti-rootkit, anti-intrusions] - it´s a free product). To be specific, because of the "defense+", which I need to disable in order to allow the unknown file "make1234-5.bat" (for instance, each try with a new name) to be run as it should. Otherwise, the batch file is run in a kind of sandbox, in order to protect my system, and it very soon fails.
And the Hugin error log is extremely laconic: "make: *** [info] Error 1", I only noticed the problem because of the short-lived popup message from the security software.

So, try to disable your security software. I wish your could stitch your pano this way.

Please tell us what worked for you!

    Good luck,

    Luís Henrique

Thanks Luis, that seems to have helped. I actually had to shut down
Kaspersky Antivirus, not just disable it, but it seems I can run Hugin
now.

More and more anti-malware prevent execution of a newly-created batch, which makes sense since AFAIK there is no execution right in Windows. I managed to keep Comodo active (I disabled it since for other reasons) by always putting my Hugin projects in a certain folder and telling Comodo that make*.bat files were allowed in that folder. I suggest you check if you could not use a similar scheme with AVG.

Crap! I can verify that this seems to be the applying to Windows 8 (x64) + AVG free too.

I had the same problem.  I have now changed the setting in Hugin, under File > Preferences > General: Temporary dir = C:/Temp/
and it works.  This is an existing folder.

I am having the same problem with Hugin 2013 b1, Win7 64, Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2013

I tried to follow the recommendation to change the temporary directory, and to add an exclusion rule for that directory
see http://support.kaspersky.com/6263

however no success. The KAV protection center shows a report saying "hugin tried to access a process of Kaspersky Anti-Virus"
(or similar, needed to translate the message back to English).

Any idea about what else I can do?
Does anyone have Hugin and KAV running with no problems?

I had the same Hugin & KasperskyAV2013 problem. Got it running by (temporarily) disabling KAV:
Open Kaspersky from the sysTray, select settings, disable as well for 'general settings' as for 'AV for files' (unmark 'enable protection')
(Not sure if both unmarks are required but that did the job anyway)
(Not sure if the English terms in KAV are correct since i got a Dutch KAV and retranslated)

You might check your AV software, but many of them offer an option to
whitelist or exempt specific folders from AV protection/scan.

Kaspersky AV does have such an option - whitelist programs and exempt folders.
However I never got it to work.

Any idea which folder should be exempted for Hugin (and which programs or exe files)?

Sorry, I have no clue. I don't run Hugin for Windows.

In settings, tab filenames, i selected a specific folder for Hugin temp store. This is the folder where the make file, the batch file (that's the problem one), etc will be stored, so that is probably the folder that should be exempted. But as said, i just temporarily disabled KAV as a whole, so didn't try to whitelist the folder.

BTW, i think that whitelisting a folder is more dangerous than temporarily disabling any AV, since malware might also try to track down whitelisted folders and use those for its malpurposes.
BTW2, after spending a whole evening on Enblend memory problems for a large pano on my Win32 system, i switched (at least temporarily) to AutoStitch - much simpler, though probably less control, but handled my large pano well
