Here are two images that make hugin go to a nonresponsive white screen after alignment. I'm using the latest windows 7 64 bit version from the web site version 2011.4.0.cf9be9344356

It seems like it has a problem aligning images that are similar and don't have a lot of straight lines? I'm experimenting with using this for making HDR images of clouds which seem to give it problems.

Thanks for your help,
Nick

Hello Nick,
This is probably not going to be any help to you, but Hugin 2011.5.0-5865
doesn't have any problems with these images.
I used rectilinear lens and 50 deg HFOV, and also tried 14mm and a crop
factor of 2.
It does look like there is a bug lurking in the version you are using,
which may still be present in my build, but I'm not triggering it, or it
only shows up in Windows.
If you haven't already done so, I would suggest experimenting a bit more
with the initial 'camera and lens data' when loading your images, to see
if you can find values that are acceptable, and values that trigger the
problem...along the lines of the last problem that you had where using
14mm and crop factor of 2 seemed to work OK.
Instead of focal length and crop factor, you should be able to use only a
HFOV, and almost any reasonable value should work.
What works OK and what triggers your problem may be helpful in tracking
down what is causing this problem.

Cheers,

Like Terry, I don't have any trouble aligning these images. I'm an
older version of Hugin running on FreeBSD.

I can confirm that. I frequently have problems with panoramas that in
part are very similar to these images. In addition, these two images
are different enough (position of clouds and trees) to make control
point detection very difficult.

One thing you haven't said is which control point detector you're
using. Whatever it is, it makes sense to try alternative detectors.
FWIW I did this with panomatic, which I find the best for this kind of
subject.

Nick, what happens if you switch off the vertical line detection?
(Preferences > Assistant > detect vertical lines)

I am using CPfind, which works OK here if these input images are
specified as rectilinear...but no points found when I experimented
with other input projections.

Terry

Thanks for your help.

It seems like the windows version is simply out of date compared to the linux version so I won't bother posting any more crash reports.

MS ICE does almost as good a job as hugin and it's never crashed on me so I think I'll just start using that until I see the windows version of hugin is up to date and possibly fixed.

Thanks,
Nick

Your Windows version looks like it is pretty close to the current release.
I run local builds from the development source, but the problem may be one
that occurs on Windows and not Linux for some reason, and hence may be
still lurking.

If it is a bug that only shows up in the Windows builds, the problem may
not get attended to if there is no bug report and info on what causes it.
If you haven't already done so, I would suggest it would be helpful if you
posted a bug report, along with the sample images and what steps cause
your problem, and what steps work.

Hugin bugs can be reported here <https://bugs.launchpad.net/hugin>

Without giving more details, you can't say that.

Hugin has never crashed on me. As Terry says, if you're having
problems, there are people who are willing to help. But for that you
need to give more details.

Sure I can. I gave the precise files that cause the crash and the exact steps needed to reproduce the error along with the exact operating system and hugin version I'm using.

Load those images and hit align. It crashes. What more do you need?

Hugin has crashed spectacularly in a wide variety of ways on me, often when playing around with different projections. I haven't bothered posting about those because the bugs I've posted so far haven't been looked at.

Maybe in a month or two I'll check out hugin again and see if it's got a new version. If so I'll post the bugs I find to the bug tracker that was linked to in this thread since posting bugs to this group doesn't seem very fruitful.

Your version is between mine and Terry's IIRC.

It works for me. It works for Terry.

I asked you for the control point detector, and also to try
alternatives. In case you're not sure how to do that, go to File ->
Preferences -> Control Point Detectors.

The bugs you have reported here are insufficiently documented. When
people try to help you, you don't answer.

Posting bugs to the bug tracker won't help much either unless you give
more detail.

Another observation: the images you supplied weren't the easiest for
Hugin to handle. The clouds ones had significant parallax, and the
studio ones had both parallax and focus issues. Clearly it's not your
intention to use these as finished photos, but it would be interesting
to know if you have the same issues with photos you really need to
process.
