Not sure what question to ask!

I am a total novice with Hugin and only intend to create two panoramas.  The learning curve is very steep and I don't even really know what questions to ask.

I have attached a panorama created from 13 images taken from Zenobia Peak Fire Lookout Tower, Dinosaur National Monument, Colorado, where I was a lookout for 16 years.  I would like to create the panorama and give it back to the Monument as a tool to help locate wildland fires in the future.

During the processing, Hugin kept indicating that there were gaps/no common points in the images but I have carefully selected the images and believe there are no gaps.

The entire panorama appears reasonably correct but only the left ~180 degrees of the image is light colored.  If the entire panorama was the same way, I think I would be happy although I might want to crop out some of the foreground and the sky.

I'm guessing this should be an easy fix but, everything is easy once one knows how!

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!!

Daniel

You’ll need to include the images. All I got was the .pto file.

Hi Daniel, the project does seem to be a complete full 360 degree panorama.

1. There is only a partial overlap between photos 6 and 7, so the
'autocrop' tool stopped there and only gives you a small portion of
the full panorama. You need to go to the Crop tab in the Fast Panorama
preview and drag the corners of the crop area to expand to fill the
whole scene. See attached screenshot, the light rectangle is the
portion of the panorama that autocrop decided (badly) was the best
cropping option.

2. The spread of control points seems ok, there are some quite large
errors (about 30 pixels), but then it is a large panorama, so this may
not be a problem.

3. There is a lot of exposure variation between the photos, I'm not
sure if this is because you had the camera on auto exposure, or if
Hugin made a mistake trying to fix the relative exposure and white
balance. You could try resetting all the 'photometric parameters',
stitch again and see if this improves anything, you can do this in
View -> Panorama Editor -> Photos tab (I just did this for you, I've
attached a version of your project where Hugin will not try to fix
exposure). If this is a worse result, I would start with the attached
project and try Optimise -> Photometric -> Low dynamic range, and see
if this gives a better result.

Let us know how you get on, this is exactly the kind of use case that
Hugin should be good at.

I think your suggestions worked.  Thanks!

I don't see how to mask the top and bottom of the image.  I found the Mask section under View/Panorama Editor but don't understand what to do next.

Then how do I export/print this as a JPEG?  I have a friend who can help make the sky uniform using Photoshop.

Thank you so much!

Daniel

The mask/crop tab in the panorama editor is for adjusting the input photos, the mask tab in the fast preview is where you can crop the final panorama.

When you stitch from the preview you should get an option to save as JPEG (I think), if not there are lots of advanced stitching options if you use the stitching tab in the panorama editor.

Thank you everyone for your assistance!  My friend and I have created a TIFF file of the whole panorama which appears quite acceptable.  There are three small anomalies at a couple of noncritical points on the horizon which we can probably fudge a little and no one will ever know!  Perhaps there are Hugin tools to fix those but that seems like advanced level manipulation.  My friend is a graphic artist and Photoshop expert and can probably do a great job.

When the Zenobia Panorama is finished, I will work on one for the other lookout.  If anyone is curious, Dinosaur National Monument is fortunate to have two staffed lookouts during the fire season.  Unfortunately for the public, access to both is through private property and is extremely restricted.

Thanks again.  I might be back if I run into further issues.  You all have been very kind and helpful!

I'm back!

I have been working on the panorama from Roundtop Lookout and am experiencing great difficulties particularly with views to the south.

I managed to do a fairly decent job creating a panorama for the views to the North from West to East but have been unable to create a suitable panorama for the view to the South or to combine the two images.

I didn't understand the logistics when I took the original 4 sets of pictures but I moved the handheld camera quite a bit side to side in an attempt to see around some buildings and other structures which somewhat obstructed the landscape.   Therefore the angles of the shots vary quite a bit and the overlaps between pictures is sometimes a bit sketchy.  I tried creating control points but once I managed to do so, it wasn't clear how to save those or do anything else.

The program is wonderful but not easy for this novice anyway!

Is it possible to send several large images to the group so you can directly see my problems?  I think I can get away with sending only 5 or 6 which are the most difficult ones.

I am grateful and this is a public service project so your continued assistance is of definite benefit to wildland fire operations.

Thanks again!

Don't attach your images to a post to the group.
Put your images on a cloud storage (such as Dropbox or similar) that everyone
who wants to can access them unencumbered.

Cheers,

The Google Drive links are to all the images of the part of the panorama which are giving me the most difficulty.  Many are partial duplicates unfortunately taken from different angles so they are somewhat of a mess!  I won't do that if I ever attempt a panorama again!  And I promise to use a tripod!

I have a graphic artist friend who can probably use Photoshop to fix the white building, solar panels and the small building with the antenna although if it is easy for any of you to do, please feel free.

Terry, thanks for your suggestion.  I notice the .au suffix on your email address... I think Australians have a deep understanding about wildland fires.  I researched being a winter lookout in Australia several years ago but it seemed that only citizens were being considered.

Thanks again to you and the whole group!

Hello Daniel,

Here is a PTO I made. The procedure is a little complicated, so tell me what you think of the result first; then I will explain how I made it.

Regards.

I really appreciate you doing this. I’m car camping for a few days so will report back when I get to my laptop.
