A .pto file stores the description of your individual panorama project.
It's basically a simple text file that Hugin can read and write, also
other tools can use it, so complex workflows use a .pto file to exchange
(meta) information about a (group of) image(s) and what to do with it.
Hugin is a User Interface (UI) to edit such a file, before one needed to
edit the text file directly and use the different tools (aka PanoTools)
like optimizer and stitcher do the actual work. Hugin aims to combine
all of that in one friendly interface and guide you through the process
with the help of an assistant.
You can also have a look at a .pto file using a simple text editor, so
you can get a better idea what is stored in such a file. A basic
